Wuffing Education Online presents
<<First Name>>
The Old English Eastertide Festival - with Dr Sam Newton FSA
(next Saturday, 9th April 2022) - and forthcoming events (below).

Dawn over St Botolph's Church, Iken, Suffolk (©Dr Sam Newton 2017).
Rediscover the old magic of Easter with a look at the Old English calendar, which reveals how the pre-Christian year was structured. We can reconstruct this calendar from Bede's early eighth-century De Temporvm Ratione Liber, “Book on the Reckoning of Time”. Of great interest is his assertion that the festival is named after the pre-Christian goddess Éostre.

We shall consider how the month of Éostre became the great Easter festival and some of the ways in which it was celebrated in early England. We shall also discuss the ‘Synod’ of Whitby in 664 and the question of the dating of Easter, which continues to this day. Finally, we shall look at Cult of the Cross, using examples from early medieval art and archaeology (such as the great gold and garnet cross from the Staffordshire Hoard), as well as Old English literature, especially the sublime poem known as The Dream of the Rood.
