World experts welcome U.S. decision to abolish daylight saving time and call on Europe to do so as a matter of urgency

  • Experts point out that European Union must do better than the US and adopt the natural time (permanent standard time), as it will improve health, safety, and economics.

  • The clock change causes abrupt negative impacts in health, safety, and productivity in our daily rhythm, especially in countries not aligned with the natural solar time, like in the case of Spain, France and Benelux.

  • The Spanish presidency of the EU Council (2023) could be a good opportunity to put the issue on the agenda and take a final decision for Europe as a whole.

Expert councils (international and Catalan) validate the BTUI Strategy 2022 - 2024

The BTUI Expert Lab is a virtual meeting point for researchers, experts and activists such as Carl Honoré, voice of the Slow movement, Camilla Kring, expert in Chronobiology, Boróka Bo, sociologist or Ulrich Mückenberger of the German Association for Time Policies. Its aim is to encourage scientific and political discussion on the use of time and to guide future research interests. This February, it met for the third consecutive year to validate and contribute reflections on the BTUI strategy.

In an international key, the Expert Lab validated the strategy for the next two years, a roadmap is established which has 3 objectives:

1) Develop the commitments of the Barcelona Declaration.
2) Consolidate and seek the sustainability of the World Network of Local and Regional Governments for Time Policies,
3) To continue making Time Use Week the main meeting point for international time policies.

The main groups of the Barcelona Declaration are activated

The Barcelona Declaration on Time Policies establishes an action plan for each of its objectives.

Following this line, during the first quarter of 2022 the main working groups have been activated.

On February 28, the first exchange meeting on local and regional time policies around the world, organized by the Network of Local and Regional Governments for Time Policies, was held to address the topic of Life-balance: work, care and time for oneself, and in which more than 30 policies promoted by local and regional institutions have been collected. A public presentation ceremony will be held on April 28.

On February 16, the research group met, where key research areas related to the use of time and its relationship with time policies were shared, with the participation of the main world research entities, such as IATUR, or the Society for Research on Biological Rhythms.

Finally, the working group for natural timetables held its meeting on March 3, with the aim of promoting the debate between the scientific community and relevant policy makers on the end of seasonal changes.

The BTUI participates in the conference "Women in the labor market", organized by the European Economic and Social Committee.
On March 8, the conference on women in the labor market organized by the European Economic and Social Committee on the occasion of International Women's Day was held. The conference put women in the labor market, addressing questions on how to improve care services and work-life balance, end gender stereotypes and harassment at work.
