- Learning to learn part 5
Dear Parents/Carers
This week I am continuing my Learning to Learn series of blogs by outlining how students can take what they have learnt through developing their mind maps (see last weeks ‘HEAD’ Lines) and transform it in to ‘bite sized’ chunks of information that can be learnt, arranged in specific orders to tell a story and referenced back to the original learning.
The ultimate goal is to get the learning in to as fewer words and pictures as possible, with these ‘triggering’ links back to the original learning – topics, units of work etc.
In basic terms, a flash card consists of a word or phase on one side and the detail on the other. These cards can be developed further by using colour, adding diagrams and referring back to where the original information can be found – revision guide, chapter and page number for example.
We all know how attached teenagers can be to their smartphones! There are also apps where they can develop flashcards. A quick search of the App Store or Google Play Store will bring up multiple options.
However, as with mind maps, flashcards are only useful if the content written/drawn on them is tested, tested and tested again. A good way to do this is by using the ‘4 box method’.
If your child has produced a deck of flashcards on a specific topic, either from their notes or a mind map, test them to see if they know and have retained the knowledge. Each time they get an answer correct, put the card in box 1. When all the cards are in box 1 start again. This may be the same day, but it’s better to spread the testing out over days and weeks to test whether the knowledge has been retained. If a correct answer is given in the 2nd round of testing, the card goes in to box 2. As you might have guessed, the aim is to get all the cards in to box 2. However, if a wrong answer is given the card goes back to the beginning, with a correct answer being needed to get it back in to box 1 and beyond. Ultimately the goal is to get all the cards in to box 4. By doing so it will show that the knowledge has been retained over a period of time, i.e. it has become part of long-term memory.
I hope you find this week’s blog helpful in the support of your child’s learning.
