Greetings Laurel Hall Families:

I am going to keep my message very brief this week. However, I would be remiss if I did not say what an absolute joy it was to watch four of the six performances of our spring musical, Anything Goes that concluded last Saturday evening. Our students on stage, and those behind the scenes were sensational. The incredible leadership and guidance of Mr. Haworth, Mrs. Williams-Krubiner and Ms. Cheryl Baxter, all of whom comprising the lead production crew, made this production special. There were many, many others, who contributed to the success of this event. To every one of them, we are very grateful.

A quick word about the show itself, particularly with respect to some of the content. Those who attended the musical will recall Mr. Haworth explaining in his “curtain speech” the challenge of watching a show written in the 1930’s through today’s eyes. We understand that some of the characters and situations were “of their time” and not something that would be written today.  Throughout the rehearsal process, discussions were had with the students involved in the show and the engagement was enlightening. According to Mrs. Williams-Krubiner and Mr. Haworth, “the opportunity to talk about how times change and the ways that we can update and adjust things to suit the time we live in was a valuable thing.”

In no way was the show intended to be offensive. However, I believe parts of the show were. That is absolutely not the fault of any student. We have heard from parents and staff, and I thank you for the input. Two things have come from the messages we have received. Next year, we need to have a more extensive vetting process prior to the show selection, at all times remaining true to our mission of kindness, sensitivity and inclusion. The other message we heard loud and clear – the Laurel Hall Middle School students involved in this production were brilliant!

Bravo!
Jay
