Fordham University Sailing Team

Patrick Dolan '25 and Roberto Lugones '24 at the King's Point Team Race Invite

Dear Friends of Fordham Sailing,

First, let me apologize for the delay in getting out this weekend report. The week after returning from our spring break training is always a busy one. This past weekend the Rams competed in three regattas, the Graham Hall Team Race, The St. Mary's Women's Interconference, and the King's Point Team Race Invite. The write ups and links to scores from each event are copied below.

Graham Hall Team Race
Following spring break, the Rams competed at the Graham Hall Team Race at the Naval Academy. This was an intersectional regatta with teams from all conferences, and a lot of MAISA rivals. After starting 1-4, the breeze picked up to a steady 20 knots and the Rams got hot. Our team won four straight races, including a win against Stanford, before there was a boat breakdown. Regatta control had to alter the regatta format and split the regatta into a top 8 and bottom 8 round robin. Unfortunately for our team, two of our recent wins did not count and the Rams were put into the bottom half round robin despite having the fifth best record at the time. Our team finished 2-1 after the split, and still secured some much needed points for conference championships. Despite the unfortunate scoring mishap, we are excited to carry this momentum into the coming weekend at SUNY Maritime and the following weekend at the Prosser.

St. Mary's Women's Interconference
After a great week of practice over spring break at ODU, the women’s team travelled to St. Mary’s to sail in a fleet race event with teams coming from all conferences.  This marked the first of more very competitive fleet races to come for the season for the Lady Rams as we look to qualify for Women’s Fleet Race Nationals.  The Lady Rams are off to a steady start while always looking to rise to the occasion of improving our consistency in race performance and results.  With challenging conditions both Saturday and Sunday with wind direction and shifts being the trademark of the St. Mary’s venue, the women’s team looks to only get better as we get into the full swing of the season.

King's Point Team Race Invite
After our spring training week at Old Dominion University (Norfolk, Virginia), we traveled back to New York to compete at the Kings Point Team Race Invite. Over the weekend, we had a variety of different conditions each day. On Saturday, we were delayed twice for dense fog and no wind. But on Sunday, we had high winds that resulted in a fast day of sailing. Overall, we completed 3 round-robins against 5 other colleges. We ended the regatta winning 5 out of 10 races. Although we had hoped for better results, it's fair to say that we definitely had more knowledge and skill in team racing after our spring break. We look forward to the next team race event to not only show what we learned over spring break but also what we learned this past weekend.

This current weekend is another busy one for the Rams as we again compete in three regattas. The Admiral Moore Team Race at NY Maritime is the final event in the team race league and will not only determine the teams that qualify for the conference championship, but also presents one last opportunity for the Rams to distinguish themselves against teams from other conferences as we vie for a selection to team race nationals. The Seahawk Women's Team Race is our only women's team race of the season. Although we wish we had more opportunities to compete in women's team racing, we are excited for the opportunity to sail in a competitive event in this growing discipline of college sailing. Finally, the Rams will be sending a younger team to compete at the Connecticut Valley Dinghy Championship for the Vietor Trophy. Racing is just getting underway at all three events and you can follow the scores at the Techscore links below.
