Thompson to Host March 29 Job Fair
UR Medicine Thompson Health will host a job fair at F.F. Thompson Hospital, 350 Parrish St. in Canandaigua, from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29.

With on-site interviews, the job fair will be held in the hospital’s Constellation Center for Health and Healing, so those attending should enter the campus from West Street and park in the lot behind the hospital.

Thompson’s open positions include nursing, clinical support, nutrition services, social work, environmental services, clerical/customer service, patient registration and recreation therapy.

The minimum starting wage at Thompson is $15 per hour. Tuition assistance – for staff members pursuing further education – is up to $6,000 per year for those employed full-time and up to $3,000 per year for those working part-time. There are additional initiatives to help associates advance in their careers, including an on-site RN-to-BSN program in partnership with Roberts Wesleyan College and a CNA-to-LPN program that covers tuition.

Visit www.ThompsonHealth.com/Careers for more information about open positions and about benefits, as well as a link to a job application.

Scholarship Applications Due to Thompson Health Guild Soon
Each year, the Thompson Health Guild awards up to five scholarships – each for $2,000 – to area high school seniors who are pursuing careers in health care.

Scholarship recipients must be registered in a human health-related field and must successfully complete their first college semester with the intent to study the second semester in a human health-related field. Eligible districts for the scholarship – based on UR Medicine Thompson Health's service area – are Bloomfield, Canandaigua, Geneva, Honeoye, Honeoye Falls-Lima, Livonia, Marcus Whitman, Midlakes, Mynderse, Naples, Newark, Palmyra-Macedon, Penn Yan, Red Jacket, Victor and Waterloo.

Online scholarship applications must be submitted by the student and guidance counselor no later than April 8.

The guild, governed by a volunteer board of directors, is the auxiliary for Thompson Health. The funds it raises help the nonprofit health system expand its facilities, purchase needed equipment and offer helpful programs for patients, senior living residents, staff and community members. For more information about the guild or the scholarship opportunity, visit www.ThompsonHealth.com/Guild.

Vinifera: A new place to experience Finger Lakes Wine — with a secret space to boot

🌐 FLTimes.com

GENEVA — “Fortune follows the brave” is a Latin proverb getting lots of play for a bitcoin company.

Jim Cecere could certainly be put in the category of “the brave.”

After all, his first Geneva business, Finger Lakes Goods, kicked off during the pandemic lockdown of 2020, starting as a web-based format before opening its doors to a new Linden Street store later that year.

How to Plan a Staycation

There are certainly reasons for a go-away vacation, but there are also very valid arguments for a staycation. Some thoughts that pop up are “use ’em or lose ’em” vacation days, money is tight (or is being allocated for a major purchase), with Covid still in the picture some hesitation about groups, no packing, etc. Whatever your motive, here are some guidelines that might make it as enjoyable as possible. Read more.

Witch Hazel Plants in Landscaping

Autumn is turning to winter. All the colorful leaves have pretty much turned brown and fallen. When you are looking at that gray almost-winter sky and most of the trees are bare, you will notice bright yellow flowers. These are part of witch hazel plants. In New York you will see the blooms emerge anywhere from mid October to early November. Regional variations can include gold or red, but yellow is still the predominant color. These flowers smell a bit citrusy. However, if you don’t detect any fragrance, it could be an Asian hybrid. Read More.

Hot Cross Buns

Hot cross buns taste like a combination of a dinner roll and cinnamon bun. In the ultra-conservative Catholic middle ages, the dietary rules for Lent were very restrictive, including no dairy products. Hot cross buns were developed to be served after mid-day on Good Friday, when the restrictions were loosened. They contain spices (symbolizing the spices used in Christ’s embalming) and orange peel (bitterness of the suffering on the cross). Read More.
