CARL BUSINESS
Register for CARL 2022 Virtual Conference

The CARL 2022 Virtual Conference, The Equity-Minded Academic Library, will take place on March 31-April 1 from 9:00 am-5:00 pm. The schedule and sessions are now available!
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
A Community Cultural Wealth Approach for Academic Research Libraries: Reclaiming Our Past and Reimagining Our Future
Dr. Tara Yosso
Professor
School of Education, University of California Riverside
Dr. Yosso’s keynote will give an overview of her community cultural wealth model, which has been received nationally and internationally as a paradigm shift for the ways we have traditionally thought about schooling structures, practices, and discourse. She will ask us to consider how we might foster a critical historical perspective of the communities we aim to serve as academic research librarians, and draw on the ingenuity and courage of those who have come before us in the struggle for justice.
Dr. Tara J. Yosso examines access to educational opportunities for Students of Color at critical transition points in their schooling trajectories (e.g. high school to community college, baccalaureate to doctorate). Her research seeks to recover counternarratives of race, schooling, inequality, and the law. Her extensively cited publications examine the ways People of Color utilize community cultural wealth to survive and resist racism and other forms of subordination. She is a first generation college student, a Professor in the School of Education at the University of California Riverside, and this year has been appointed as the Inaugural Distinguished Scholar in Residence at the Institute for Emancipatory Education at the Connie L. Lurie College of Education at San José State University
Outreach for Equity: Student-Centered Strategies & Futures
Sandy Enriquez
Special Collections Public Services, Outreach & Community Engagement Librarian, University of California Riverside
What does outreach look like through an equity-minded and anti-racist lens? How can we adapt to better center the needs, perspectives, and experiences of students (particularly BIPOC and other underrepresented students) in our work? These are not rhetorical questions, but rather crucial questions we need to consider as we unpack whom our current strategies serve, and what changes we must make to move beyond performativity. Drawing on my own experiences in community engagement (both as a professional and as a former student) has helped me develop my approach to student-centered outreach at UCR. In this presentation, I will share some of these practices, as well as speak more broadly on how we can begin to incorporate equity-mindedness across our outreach workflows. Reimagining what programming, exhibitions, and other outreach initiatives could look like through community collaboration, slow librarianship, and anti-racist frameworks will help us build strategies for a more inclusive and equitable future.
Sandy Enriquez is the Special Collections Public Services, Outreach & Community Engagement Librarian at the University of California, Riverside. She received her MA in Latin American & Caribbean Studies at New York University and her MUS from Long Island University. Prior to UCR, she was a Collections Assistant at Bobst Library and a Graduate Assistant at the Tamiment Library & Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives. She is Latinx of Quechua and Andean descent, bilingual and first generation. She is a recipient of the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for Diversity, Inclusion & Cultural Heritage, as well as a Spectrum Scholar.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Norma Juarez Durian
Where do you currently work, and what is your job title/role?
Thanks for this opportunity. My name is Norma Juarez Durian, I am a Research & Instruction Librarian at the University of La Verne. My main role is to teach information literacy to undergraduates in the social sciences disciplines. I also offer research appointments for students that wish to work one-on-one with me for individual research help.
Why did you join CARL? What do you most enjoy about being a CARL member?
I think I joined CARL back in 2010 or 2011, when I first started working in academic libraries as a professional librarian. My friends and colleagues (and mentors!) at the UC Riverside Rivera Library introduced me to CARL. I attended my first CARL conference in 2012 and thought it was a wonderful organization. I’ve enjoyed networking and meeting other CA librarians and learning about all the wonderful things my colleagues do. I love attending the interest group events/presentations and I am currently the chair of CARLDIG-S.
Are you working on anything special right now or in the near future you'd like to share with other CARL members?
My colleague Liberty McCoy and I are working on a paper about the benefits of individual research appointments/consultations and library anxiety. We will survey our students to learn about their experiences with research appointments and assess how they felt before and after these meetings. We are also working with a psychology faculty member here at ULV to help us analyze the data. We’re very excited to see what we learn about our students and hopefully find new ways to help them succeed.
What new approaches to your work have you tried recently? Have any of them been particularly successful or challenging?
I’ve encouraged faculty members to add me as their embedded librarian so that I can contact students directly via Blackboard. This allows me to send information about library programs and services that they might otherwise miss in the sea of communications. I get a better idea of the course and assignments, and I am better equipped to make appropriate resource recommendations. Outreach and engagement have been especially tough the last 2 years.
What’s something you recently read/watched/listened to that you can’t stop thinking about or is helping you process recent events? Why?
I recently listened to The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. The main character had many regrets in life and was given the opportunity to change her past. I think we all have regrets, but this book reminded me that we can’t change the past, but we can start making changes today. There is always hope for the future.
Do you have a colleague you'd like to recommend for the Member Spotlight column? Email the Editor for more information at carlnewsletter@gmail.com.

- Ken moves to approve. Jennifer and Shamika second. Motion approved.
- ACTION: Rachel will set up a Doodle poll for the DaL orientation
- CARL Resources
- Rachel directed new members to the resources on the website
- Jennifer shared bylaws and standing rules via chat:

- We will have 2 keynote sessions, 11 general sessions, 5 poster sessions, 3 interest group sessions, and 2 vendor presentations.
- We currently have three sponsors, with a possible fourth that we'll know more about in the next few days. The total brought in so far is $3000, which is $1000 more than I'd budgeted, so yay us!
- The General Membership meeting is scheduled for Friday, April 1, 9:00-9:50am

- Listservs update
- Ken shared he does not have access to SCIL. CARLALL has been running smoothly, aside from some spam messages. Ken is going to make a list of the YM directory and ensure they are in the the CARLALL directory next.
- Jennifer shared there is a lot of manual work, so it can be troublesome. Jennifer has been cleaning all the listserv email lists. CARLALL listserv is for paid CARL members, except the IG listservs.
- Membership status of IGs
- SCIL listserv manager declined to provide password for the listserv. Discussion about non-members that may be part of IG listservs.

- Edeama recommended that the IG chairs meet with the board and reach an understanding moving forward regarding listservs, and emphasizing the unity in our profession.

- Treasurer Report (Jennifer)
- Vote on 2022 Proposed Budget

- Laura moved, Ken seconded. Budget approved.
- ACTION: Rachel asked elected officers to reach out if your institution is unwilling to fund your ALA/ACRL membership.
- Web Assessment report & recommendations: Next steps (Ken, David)
- Website
- As requested by the Board, an addendum has been added to the Final Report, setting out in detail the steps needed to prepare for and implement a new Web site and membership platform, along with accompanying responsibilities
- Ken shared background information: The website is fully HTML, so it is very outdated. Web Assessment committee was put together to improve the website, along with the membership committee. YM was brought in, but is used minimally. The report outlines alternate choices from YM. Recommendation is to create an ad hoc committee to design and migrate content to a new website. No timeline yet, but David and Ken will discuss that.
- Membership system
- YM renewal is April/May 2022.
- Rachel suggested to work on this migration so that we can not renew YM in the May 2023 year, even if it means paying for a second membership platform for 2022. Ken confirmed that this is their goal.
- Rachel suggested reaching out to others who are using the proposed vendor, Wild Apricot, to get their feedback. Kelli said she can reach out to a group that she knows who is using it.
- Wild Apricot pricing discussion: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13ixpe1jiYNPk5G7Kz6aP7e_69dQ3MBq3Paagay94xz0/edit#gid=0
