Marian College Celebrates 40 Years

From the Principal

He mihi maioha, Faa-talofa atu, Greetings,

Marian College is now 40 years old, and we celebrated this milestone on Friday 25 March.  Sr Eleanor Capper and Mrs Kathy Seaward joined us to cut a cake and share some of their memories.  They were joined by first day pupil Philippa Stevenson (Grocott) and Carmel Gregan-Ford from our Board of Trustees.  I have realised that I have now been at Marian for over half of the time the school has been in existence.  This certainly gave me pause for thought, but I know how fortunate I am to be part of Marian College.

There is always time for cake so staff and students enjoyed a treat and you can see from the photos in this newsletter that it was a lovely day.  I particularly enjoyed the impromptu dancing at lunchtime!  We are well into the construction of the new school with an exciting future ahead, so we feel very blessed.

With faith in our future,

Mary-Lou Davidson (Mrs)
Principal

Special Character

Prayer for Peace
Our focus for our Lenten karakia for each day during the week was for Ukraine and on Friday 25 March, we joined Pope Francis in a special day of prayer for Ukraine.  Each Wā Whānau created their own karakia for peace, for the refugees who have fled Ukraine and for the countries who have opened their whenua and homes to those who have left Ukraine.  These karakia are on our Special Character whiteboard which surrounds our scripture quote for the year: 'Love one another as I have loved you'  John 13:34.  Our Catholic Diocese states, "This is the season of Lent, which is about change, the conversion of the heart.  Christ calls us to love our enemies and to embrace each other as brothers and sisters".

May we all continue to pray for peace for all countries at war and for all those people who have had to flee their home/country because of war.
Mrs Myra Fidow, Director of Ministry
Recently, Beautianna Gamble and Maria Ilalio had the opportunity to attend a Zoom ‘chat’ with the Caritas Education Team, Justine and Michael.

During this chat, we were joined by other schools across Aotearoa, to discuss and reflect on Catholic Social Teaching principles, justice issues and many more interesting events like Caritas Challenge.  The leaders led us in a number of fun activities surrounding and focusing on poverty, peace and development.  We both had so much fun, most especially in the Global Farmers Simulation, where we were given a scenario and we had to act out what it's like in those situations.  It was an eye-opening activity, giving us a short and brief experience of what it's like living in such conditions.  This was one of our main highlights.

In short, Caritas ‘chat’ provided us with abundant knowledge, in a very fun, comfortable and engaging environment.  We left with so much information which not only challenges us in how we lead, but also teaches and educates us.  It was truly a rewarding experience.

As leaders, we hope to incorporate our learnings and findings from this chat into our leadership roles.  We strive for the betterment of our Marian community, exposing and educating the girls in things that help make a change.  This allows us to be good stewards of creation, helping others make a difference in society.
Maria Ilalio, Head of Special Character
We are praying for...
We remember students, staff, and members of our Marian College community who are currently in hospital or unwell.

We also remember especially students, staff and their families who have lost loved ones recently, especially Laylah Reid (Year 9) - Great Grandfather.

Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.  May they rest in peace.  Amen

Congratulations

Lots of Socks in Support of World Down Syndrome Day
World Down Syndrome day was 21 March, chosen as such because people with Down Syndrome have a duplication of the 21st chromosome, hence 21/3.  This year’s theme is ‘inclusion’, and that applies not just for Down Syndrome, but for anybody who is, or has the potential to be marginalised by the wider community. Practicing the concept of inclusion in everyday life is so beneficial and rewarding for everybody, not just people with Down Syndrome.

Marian College Sport Update
Return to Play after a Covid Infection
You will be aware the symptoms of Covid vary for each individual and can impact some longer than others.  As some of our students are beginning to return to school post having Covid it is important, you as a Whānau, are still monitoring your child.  The monitoring of physiological factors is crucial particularly as they return to sport and physical activity where their cardiovascular system (lungs) are under increased pressure.  A simple rule of thumb to follow is if they have symptoms below then they should seek medical advice before returning to intense physical activity.  A recent article suggests the guideline of 7 days symptom-free before returning to physical activity plus a minimum of 10 days rest.  If any student is still feeling increased fatigue and muscle soreness it may be of benefit to seek medical advice for a graduated return to play programme.  Returning to play before ready can have prolonged effects on an individual's recovery to full health.
