NLCA Newsletter Vol. 1
March 2022

Welcome to your source for news, information and opinion on lactation-related hot topics in the US

We hope you will follow along with us, each month, through this email newsletter and online at NLCA.us.

We exist to empower and advocate for the holders of the IBCLC® credential in the marketplace, in legislation and in policy. Our vision is to advance health by ensuring access to care by persons holding the IBCLC® credential.

Listen to our President, Leah, share why she joined NLCA!
Each month, we will introduce to you a different NLCA Board Member. Our board is made up of current and former Board Members of ILCA®, USLCA, IBLCE®, HMBANA, Baby-Friendly USA and many state breastfeeding coalitions. We are current and former Editors of the Journal Clinical Lactation, members of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Human Lactation and authors of numerous journal manuscripts and textbooks. We are attorneys, APNs, RNs, Dietitians, University Faculty Members and LLL leaders and we are all holders of IBCLC® certification.

The National Lactation Consultant Alliance (NLCA) was created to support the holders of the IBCLC® credential and to advocate for the clinical lactation consultant profession. While the IBCLC® profession has made impressive strides toward being accepted as an allied health profession, gaining integration onto the healthcare team, and realizing more employment opportunities, the IBCLC® is not consistently recognized as a reimbursable provider by public and private insurers, limiting access to IBCLC® care by families with low resources.

We:
  • Are lactation consultants working for lactation consultants
  • Aim to improve access to clinical lactation care through IBCLC® licensure
  • Advocate to secure public and private insurance reimbursement for the IBCLC®
  • Work to place the IBCLC® at the legislative and policy-making table at the state and federal level
  • Advocate for the inclusion of the IBCLC® in publications, recommendations, laws, policies, and regulations promulgated by healthcare organizations and state and federal agencies
  • Promote equity and diversity in the IBCLC® profession through our Center for Lactation Equity
We agreed that an organization whose purpose was to advocate for the IBCLC® was needed to better meet the needs of childbearing families! Welcome to NLCA!

The truth about the Georgia lawsuit: Goliath has just slayed David!

Social and traditional media outlets are all abuzz celebrating the destruction of a 10 year grassroots coalition effort to pass licensure for the International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC®) in Georgia. Are you sure you know the truth? Do you want to understand what actually happened, from those on the ground in Georgia?  Learn the truth at: NLCA.us.

Our Advocacy at Work

Much of our work is behind the scenes! We monitor legislation and provide input on bills that are relevant to the IBCLC®. We answer the calls for comments from Federal agencies and departments that appear in the Federal Register. We consult with local advocates in states wishing to file IBCLC® licensing bills. We are frequent speakers and publish in peer reviewed journals. We provide education regarding IBCLC® licensure and reimbursement. We take every opportunity to advance the IBCLC® profession.
