START Talks: Building Community Through Storytelling

The 2022 Virtual START National Training Institute is 6 weeks aways and as we prepare for another year of collaborative learning, we’d like to share a highlight from the 2021 Virtual SNTI program—START Talks: Building Community Through Storytelling.

START Talks aim to inspire, encourage, and provide hope through stories that highlight our resilience and strength, put us in touch with our humanity and help to make the connection between our personal growth, the experiences we have, and the stories we share with others.
"The stories we live and tell provide coherence and meaning and orient our sense of purpose."

-Sharon Daloz Park
The 2021 START Talks featured six 10-minute stories from a diverse group of leaders representing professionals, people with lived experience of IDD-MH, and family members. Each will share their stories as leaders and will reflect on their experiences with the National Center for START Services. What made them travel on this road? What kept them on the journey?

This START Talks recording includes videos from the following:
  • Melanie Hecker, MPA, NCSS Research and Training Associate
  • Dan Tomasulo, PhD, Academic Director and core faculty at the Spirituality Mind Body Institute (SMBI), Teachers College, Columbia University
  • Elona Wilson, Parent Advocate
  • Tawara Goode, MA, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Georgetown University Medical Center; Director, Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development (GUCCHD); Director of the National Center for Cultural Competence at GUCCHD
  • Joan B. Beasley, PhD, Director, National Center for START Services
We are looking forward to seeing you at the 2022 Virtual SNTI May 2-4th.
