Poulsbo Sons of Norway 2-44 - President's Message
Hej all,
Every monthly lodge meeting I have been sharing with our newly voted in members about our Sons of Norway motto: Freedom, Fraternity, and Progress. As things become less formal with our meetings and celebrations, we may forget the underpinnings of what makes Sons of Norway unique to Poulsbo lodge. It has me thinking about us here in Poulsbo Lodge today in 2022.
Freedom: I think of how we as different people can do and interact with freedom. We operate our lodge different than others because of our special location and features.  Of course, we have rules by which we operate so that all have equal understanding and freedom to act within these boundaries. Our bylaws, policies, and procedures ensure the operation of the lodge in a manner important to us as members. Things we ought not take for granted.  I’m grateful that International Headquarters a long time ago drafted and maintained a code for lodges to operate and the freedom to make choices with legal authority.
Fraternity: This is a unique feature for our lodge as we have so much to participate in.  Many cultural and social activities to choose from makes this a “club” where members can enjoy and interact with each other on a nearly daily basis. From woodcarving to needlework, from choir to dancing, from parades to enjoying a drink in the Trolls' Den or having a meal together on a Friday evening.  This is fraternity.  And think of the hundreds of lodges across the US, Canada and Norway through which you have a brotherhood or sisterhood connection.
Progress: The way things are done are meant to evolve and improve.  The look and feel of this lodge are changed.  The pandemic has made that happen in lots of ways. Some of the older members don’t recognize as many people as before. And since we average about 20 new members each lodge meeting, you might just bump into some new faces around here. The refreshing of the interior décor of the lodge has made a noticeable difference to our members and to our potential patrons who want to rent our beautiful rooms with a view of the bay for their weddings, parties and reunions.
These factors of freedom, fraternity and progress mean that it's not just mine to enjoy.  Its ALL of ours to enjoy.  Its ours to speak kindly to our fellow members and the persons we employ.  Its ours to enjoy the fun and fulfillment of operating this nonprofit business in “little Norway” by volunteering time to cook, clean, host, fund, govern, repair, install and share with others and in the community we call home. Thank you for being a part of the lodge!
Fred vaere med deg,
Paul Anunson

Lodge Meeting Minutes
Kort om Kultur
Christmas traditions garner far more attention, but Easter holds an important place in the modern Norwegian calendar as well. Called "påske" (poh-skuh), Easter represents, for most, at least a 5-day weekend. Maundy Thursday is a holiday, as is Good Friday ("langfredag" long-frey-dog) when many attend a traditional somber church service.

Then with the weekend, the celebration begins. Many extended families and friends gather for fun. Since spring is breaking the long dark winter and the days are getting longer, everyone wants to be outside. There is typically no formality - no suits or bunads. Casual dress and food are the order of the weekend. Fare is cheap hot dogs ("pølse" poll-suh), chips ("chips"), soda pop ("brus" broos), and beer ("øl" uhl). Weather is typically sometimes rarely sunshine, which everyone prays for starting a few weeks in advance.

Those who stay close to home will often take a hike ("tur" toor) in the forest with their pølse and brus in backpacks. They'll build a campfire and stay for the afternoon. Hopefully grandma remembers to bring the hard-boiled eggs! Typically brown, eggs aren't dyed like in the American tradition, but drawn on with markers. Then they're rolled down a hill to see who can roll their egg the farthest.

Many take advantage of the extended time off of work to take one last big ski vacation. Easter snow ("påske snø" poh-skuh snuh) is a term that everyone knows, meaning it's grainy and crunchy from melting and re-freezing. With any luck, there will be a fresh layer of snow atop a hard frozen snow crust ("skare" skar-uh) and cross-country skiing is possible anywhere on the highlands ("vidde" vidd-uh) without sinking into the deep snow.

Sunday is the first day of Easter, followed by the second day of Easter ("andre påske dag" ahn-druh poh-skuh dog), third day of Easter for school kids, and maybe fourth day of Easter. These extra days, for those not on long ski holidays, are typically spent at home watching crime shows on TV and scrolling facebook.

Happy Easter everyone!/God påske alle sammen!

Fraternally,
Colin Kuester
Cultural Director

Visste Du?
(Did you know?)
DID YOU KNOW:  There are House Rules for the Trolls’ Den and they are posted on the bulletin board in the bar.  One of the rules deals with food in the Trolls' Den.  While we want our members to enjoy the bar, Rule #18 states that, when the lodge is offering meals for sale in the Trolls’ Den, members are not to bring their own food into the bar.  The only exception to this rule is that desserts may be brought in that can be shared by all present.

News from the Building Association
After many weeks, the bar refrigerator is fixed and is running properly again. We appreciate your patience as it took longer than anticipated, especially to the bar staff who showed resourcefulness in creating picnic ice buckets to cool down those beverages we enjoy.  It was an extensive rebuild and we hope it will last many, many years. As it is in this old lodge, equipment and fixtures will need to be redone periodically to keep this place running well.  Because of the rent the lodge pays to the Building Association, we are able to put aside savings for these repairs, and as long as they don’t all happen at one time, we should be able to deal with the needs as they come critical to the operation of the lodge.
Special Notice: All members, in good standing, of the local Poulsbo Sons of Norway lodge are also members of the local Poulsbo Sons of Norway Building Association.  The Building Association Board of Directors is in the process of reviewing and potentially revising their bylaws – specifically looking at expense dollar maximums, and potentially more items.  If you would like to comment on ANY changes to the Building Association bylaws, please contact Jerry Block or Marty Stickels.  The tentative plan is to have a draft copy of the revision in the May Maaken and to approve the revisions at the June lodge (Building Association) meeting.  (A current copy of the bylaws is attached)
The Building Association Board of Directors will elect three new Directors at the June lodge (Building Association) meeting.  Please let Paul Anunson know if you are interested in serving a three-year term.
