MARCH 2022
Hello Extraordinary Professionals!
Spring has sprung! I can feel it and believe it despite the temperamental weather. Do you like to do Spring cleaning? Let’s consider getting rid of the old and making way for a clean start, as Spring emulates. What am I proposing? Cleaning up some misperceptions about cover letters. What are your thoughts about cover letters?
Are cover letters really necessary in this day and age of quick, online applications?
Absolutely necessary? No.
Strongly recommended and highly advantageous? YES!
Many online job postings have a quick, easy apply feature that does not require or request a cover letter; HOWEVER, that doesn’t mean you should not include one. Yes, it takes more work and thought than just quickly uploading a generic resume. But why apply at all if you’re not going to put your best foot forward?
Recruiters and hiring managers receive scores, if not hundreds, of resumes per job posting. Many arrive without a cover letter. Unless specifically instructed to NOT include a cover letter with your resume, you can safely assume it is ok to do so. Your cover letter may be the differentiator that advances you to the top of the pile for consideration for the role you are pursuing.
A resume speaks to your specific skills and experience, but a cover letter is where you have an opportunity to convey your personality and appeal to the employer about how your skills and experience will benefit the company. Without a cover letter, you are depending on the person screening resumes to connect the dots on their own. With a cover letter, you are outlining that connection for them and providing reasons for them to want to interview you.
I have a great resource for you below. It includes a cover letter template and a complete "Job Seeker’s Guide to Cover Letters" to help you stand out among other qualified candidates for that ideal role you’re seeking. Check it out, and make sure you use this very important tool with your next job application.

Stay Well,
