March 2022 BDS Newsletter

Dear all.
Spring has started, so it is time for a newsletter

First of all - our thoughts are with the Ukrainian people, and especially the Ukrainian surgeons. Their Society for Hand Surgery has some outstanding surgeons, and hand surgeons worldwide are supporting them by collecting and sending medical supplies, and giving them webinars on trauma surgery, Walant (which is more practical than a full anaesthetic in many cases) and generally trying to help any way they can. I applaud the support.

Now for UK news

Best British Paper Presentation

In the last newsletter I asked for votes to decide on the best British paper presentation at the Dupuytren Conference.
I am delighted to say Dr Laird from Liverpool was voted best. We send a hamper and a certificate.
Thanks to Professor Furniss for making a beautiful certificate, much better than my attempt.

Let's keep engaging with researchers so they know we appreciate what they do!

DISC trial
The DISC trial (comparing collagenase injections to surgery) has closed to participants, they have reached their quota and are doing follow ups now

Hand2 trial
The Hand2 trial is starting up, which will compare needle fasciotomy to fasciectomy (needle release to surgery).

ECM Research

The team in Liverpool is continuing ECM research, and they have been given a grant to continue the research into the ageing extracellular matrix (ECMage). The research will be part of a wider project with a large network of researchers and universities involved.

A call for your input
The University of Liverpool is running a student research project to understand how Dupuytren’s Disease treatments are selected by patients. If you are over the age of 18 years, have Dupuytren’s Disease and would like to have your say, please follow the link below to participate anonymously. The survey is preceded by the participant information sheet with 14 points to consider before deciding whether to participate.  Many thanks in advance from the research team.

International Dupuytren Society
The International Dupuytren Society had their AGM and quite a few national societies were represented. The Dupuytren Research Group in America is now analysing the first batch of blood samples they have taken in their search for a biomarker of active disease.

Splinting?
Have you tried splinting before surgery, even if you've not had surgery yet?
A hand therapist, Leanne Miller, would like to get in touch as she is hoping to do a study on conservative treatment and splinting for Dupuytrens.
Contact her via email:
