Spring has sprung! 🌸
It’s the season that brings us warmer days and more sunlight to enjoy! When out enjoying this weather, do remember to always be aware of your surroundings, ensure you don’t disturb wildlife, and bring your trash home with you/dispose of properly!

Outdoor adventure awaits!

With March marking the beginning of the spring season, it's a prime time of year for wildlife watching! Here are just a couple of things that springtime in the Northwest brings…
Woodlands and wildflowers

The trees and forests become bustling with life. Birds are nesting, singing and chicks are hatching! We also experience colorful mixes of flowers that are in bloom this time of year, making hikes and adventures that bit more special.

Tufted puffins
These puffins return to the Pacific Northwest coast during spring and summer months to raise thier young.
Osoberry
You’ll see the leaves of the osoberry plant unfurl, these are common shrubs found in the lowland forests and wetlands of the PNW.
Gray whales
At the start of spring, gray whales migrate to cooler waters along the Pacific coast between Alaska and Mexico. Get the binoculars out!
Help the hummingbirds!

Hummingbirds are beautiful residents of British Columbia! Some, like Anna’s hummingbird, (pictured below) stay all year-round.
It’s a great time of year to spot hummingbirds, and it’s also important to be careful when trimming trees or other garden work - so as to not disturb or harm their nests.

If you have a hummingbird feeder, only use a solution of 1 part white sugar and 3 parts water, changing to a fresh solution every week. Hummingbirds need to continuously fuel up throughout the day as they are so active! 🌸

What should you do if you find an animal injured or in distress?

As we approach nesting season for many birds across North America, the likelihood of spotting a baby bird in need of help is naturally higher. According to the Wildlife Rescue Association of British Columbia, if you spot a bird (or any other animal) that may need help, ensure you STOP and OBSERVE first. Continued information and advice is available on their website: www.wildliferescue.ca

💡 Please note, here at NWPS we are NOT a rescue or rehabilitation center - however there are lots of amazing organizations that do just that. Click the button below for those resources!
