HAPPY WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH!
What do you get when you invite a queen, Ballerina and movie star to the table? A tasty party filled with some historical bites. Follow along!
The celebration of Women’s History Month continues.  And when it comes to women and food, the contributions are endless!  From famous Chefs like Edna Lewis, known for her contributions to traditional Southern Cuisine, to Julia Child, known for bringing her fabulous French cuisine and cookbooks to the American people to B. Smith, who began her career as a model before becoming a restaurateur and celebrity chef. There are so many women that deserve recognition for the delicious nourishment we enjoy, including those in our family. Shout out to the Big Mommas, Abuelas, Memaws and Bubbes who have been throwing down since forever.

Today, we honor those women with some delicious recipes and history bites! But first, a toast.
I raise my glass and invite you to fill up and raise your glasses with some delicious beverages named after some sassy and classy women. First up, we have a Spiked Dirty Shirley, named after the 1930’s child movie star Shirley Temple.

Traditionally, the Shirley Temple is a non-alcoholic concoction made with grenadine and ginger ale or lemon lime soda but a splash of vodka adds the perfect twist!
Sangria ladies, I have something for you too! Did you know Sangria was the summer party drink of the 1964 World’s Fair and the beverage of choice for the women in Jane Austen’s novels? I know they would have loved my Southern Girl Sangria and you will too! Fill up and raise your glass.

Cheers to you! Cheers to the women who inspired these classics and cheers to our bellies. We deserve these tasty treats.
First historical bite, the Margherita Skillet Pizza. It is believed that Margherita of Savoy, Queen of Italy in 1889, loved pizza made with mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil, which also happen to be the colors of the Italian flag. While visiting Naples, she asked the famous Raffaele Esposito of Pizzeria Brandi, to make her favorite. He named the combination after her and the rest is history making its way to pizzerias around the world and soon your kitchen!
Next, dig your fork in a Pavlova with Mixed Berries, a delicious dessert with a meringue-based crisp crust, soft and light inside, usually topped with fruit and whipped creme. Named after the ballerina Anna Pavlova who captivated audiences across the world with her performances including the The Dying Swan in 1905. We see the essence of her beauty and grace captured in the light and the airy but oh so delicious design.
Pizza, drinks and dessert, what more can you ask for! When you try these recipes at home, you will also be giving tribute to the women that inspired them. So feel like a Queen, Movie Star, Prima Ballerina or just the best version of yourself, and remember you, we are women and we are strong!
