About as Good as it Gets

Since lifting Covid restrictions at Woodlawn, the Woodlawn reopening team has discontinued its weekly meeting, but continue to watch our county’s data as it relates to infections and hospitalizations.

The positivity rate has fallen to 1.2% meaning that only about 1 in every 100 tests conducted in Sedgwick County is positive. This is the lowest rate since the start of the pandemic.

Those hospitalized in Wichita with Covid has fallen to 25, with only 7 persons in the ICU, just below what had been the lowest number hospitalized last spring.

The CDC’s new color-coded county map has not only Sedgwick County in the “green” and safest state, but all surrounding counties and much of Kansas is green now as well.
There are no guarantees a new variant won’t disrupt our lives again in the future, but for now, we are enjoying a reprieve from masks and quarantines.

Because of this, Woodlawn is enjoying more persons in worship than at any time since to March 2020 when we first closed as the pandemic was declared. While those who wish to mask may continue to do so, most are enjoying mask-free worship and singing, as well as fellowship over coffee and cookies.

Plans are underway for a special Holy Week and Easter, including Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and a full slate of Easter services, including our popular Easter Saturday Contemporary Service and Sunrise Service. Our Easter breakfast returns this year, and a special Children’s egg hunt is being planned for Easter morning at 11am on the church lawn. Details on all of these events will be in future newsletters!
If you’ve not joined us in person yet for worship on Sunday mornings, I invite you to come for the remainder of our Lenten Series “The Grace of Les Miserables.” This week we will learn more about Fantine, the mother of Cosette, and discuss poverty as a central theme of the story.

If it is better for you to remain in your home for worship, you can continue to watch an abbreviated online service on our Facebook page, our YouTube channel, or our website.

Until Sunday,

This week I continue to offer you glimpses into our “Lent and Plain Sight” study. This group meets on Wednesday nights at 6pm in the Chapel. You are welcome to join us anytime during Lent! Each week we look at ordinary objects and read devotions that discover how we can find God in even the ordinary.

Here is an excerpt from the study, “Lent in Plain Sight,” written by Jill J. Duffield. This excerpt is from a devotion on reconciliation through the cross.

“Estrangement, hurt, arguments, division: every family, every congregation, every group encounters the challenges of life together. When we invest deeply, we inevitably struggle mightily to maintain our connections to one another. The temptation to stop talking, walk away, resort to our own corners, takes over sometimes. Separation seems like the best option, the only way to preserve ourselves or some semblance of survival. Reconciliation? Impossible. At least for a while. During those days of agonizing unraveling, be it divorce or a bitter argument, an inability to forgive, or the guilt of knowing our actions damaged a person we love, the cross of Jesus Christ holds the hope of healing as yet unrealized. […] Despite the painful reality that all things on earth, in our lives, in our families and churches at times fall apart, the cross of Jesus holds all of us and all our chaotic circumstances together. Through the cross of Christ, God was pleased to reconcile to God’s self all things. All things. The scars on Jesus’ hands, his feet, his sides show us that no wound is too grievous for God to heal and make whole, reconciliation never impossible now that peace has been made through the cross. Not all human estrangement ends in a joyous reunion like Joseph weeping on his brother’s neck or Esau running to meet Jacob with forgiveness not vengeance. Divorce happens. Congregations split. People refuse to speak to each other and take grudges to the grave. But we know not even the finality of death thwarts the love of God. The cross holds all things together, brings all things together, draws us all, in the end, together. When the ache of broken relationships or disappointment in ourselves or others reigns, we cling to the hope of the reconciliation of the cross, knowing that Christ has borne all sin, and therefore reconciliation, no matter how remote, how hard, how improbable is undeniably possible on earth and in the fullness of time and ultimately inevitable in heaven.”

I am caught by the words, “The cross holds all things together, brings all things together, draws us all, in the end, together.” In a time when divisions, destruction, separation and polarity seem to be at every turn… I pray we find HOPE in remembering that the cross indeed holds all things together, in the fullness of time, on earth as it is in heaven.

A Word From Our Youth Director

Spring is here!  Last week our youth had the week off, as they celebrated spring break. It was fitting, then, that the first official day of spring was this Sunday – coinciding with the final day of spring break.  We can finally ditch those winter coats in favor of warm days, enjoying the beauty and blooms of spring.

One of the ways that you can do that is by joining us for our Children’s and Youth Golf Tournament that helps support our camperships.  This year’s golf tournament is on April 9 – just a few weeks away!  On that day, we will tee off at 8am and have some tremendous fun in the warm spring weather, while knowing that the proceeds will help our youth and children attend camp this summer.

This year, with the rising cost of camp, we are excited to increase the amount of our camperships, offering each child and youth that would like to go to camp half the cost of camp, up to $150.  We do this because our camps offer children and youth some of the best faith-building experience that we can provide.  They are immersed in their faith and the beauty of God’s creation for a week and come back with stories of how they connected with God during their time at camp.

Make sure to join us for our golf tournament on April 9 to help support these children and youth.  Sign up in the church office today!

Thanks,

Bryce Fuhrmann
Youth Director

I hope you are enjoying your spring break! Regular activities for WOW return this week!

Page-turners are exciting books, the kind you don’t want to put down, the kind you would stay up extra late to read. Books are exciting when we can find ourselves in the stories and imagine being a part of the adventure. This month we are going to look at some of the page-turning stories of the Bible.
Each of these stories has something valuable to teach us about our patient and powerful God who prepares us to fight temptation and celebrates us, the heroes, in our own real-life adventures!

Join us on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings as we investigate some of the page-turning stories of the Bible.

With our attendance on Sunday mornings picking up, I would love to separate our kids back into age groups. But to do that I need help! Would you consider volunteering one or more Sunday mornings a month? Ideally, we will have Kindergarten through 2nd grade, 3rd Grade (Bible Boot Camp), and Club 45 back on Sunday mornings. I will need 2 more volunteers each Sunday morning to make that happen. This will benefit the kids greatly as they move into deeper conversations about where they are in their own lives without fearing what the older or younger children around them might think. If you are called to volunteer your time with these awesome kiddos, please let me know! We would be forever grateful for your gifts of time and energy with these cool kids!

See you soon!

Caitlin

Moment for Mission

UMCOR United Methodist Committee On Relief

Each week in worship we have prayed for those in Ukraine and for an end to the unjust devastation that plagues so many innocent people. This Sunday we have the opportunity to put our prayers into action as the United Methodist Committee on Relief or UMCOR is our Moment for Mission.

Already, UMCOR has been responding on the ground to the situation. Grants for immediate relief have been given to United Methodist partners in Ukraine as well as neighboring nations—Poland, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia—to support those who remain in Ukraine as well as those who have fled the violence. These grants are providing humanitarian assistance in the form of food, water, clothing, shelter and other necessary supplies. The situation in eastern Europe is evolving, and Global Ministries and UMCOR will continue to respond in the months and years ahead

Remember that 100% of any gift you give today goes to these efforts in eastern Europe. Additionally, your gift today to UMCOR is being matched up to a total of $3,000 by the Woodlawn Missions Team with proceeds from last year’s Winterfest. Let’s make a difference together.

Giving remains critical to our church’s mission and ministry. You may mail contributions to the church at 431 S. Woodlawn Blvd. Derby, KS  67037 or
go to www.woodlawnumc.net and click the “Giving” link to give online.

MISSION TOTALS
Lord's Diner $120
Camperships $245
Human Relations $255
Overseas Care Pkgs $175
Weekly announcements can now also be found on our website at https://www.woodlawnumc.net/news/.

Lenten Series Has Begun

This Lent we are diving into the Grace of Les Miserables. Whether you’ve read the novel, seen the Broadway musical, heard its soundtrack, or seen the several screen adaptations, you probably already know the power in the story. Join us in worship as we hear the stories of grace to be found in this classic musical. We will also gather for a “talk back”/small group study Sundays right after church at 11am where we will go more in depth.
Register below for the small group today!

Our annual golf tournament is coming up on April 9th!
Woodlawn UMC has a long history of providing meaningful spiritual experiences for children and youth in our community. Our mission is to spiritually shape people to be the heart, hands, and feet of Jesus. One way that we are able to do that effectively with our children and youth is through our camping ministry at Camp Horizon. In a typical year, we send approximately 75 youth and children to Camp Horizon for a week of connecting with God through nature, community, and worship. In order to make this affordable for each of our families, we pay half the cost (up to $150) for each person who registers for camp. That means we need more than $6000 to cover the cost of camp for our children and youth. All the money raised from the sponsorships of our upcoming golf tournament will go toward covering this cost for our summer camps this year.

Do you know of anyone who would like to be a sponsor? We have 3 ways to sponsor, ranging from $25-$100. Contact Caitlin Ott or Bryce Fuhrmann for more information. Sign up in the church office.

Stephen Ministers are here to help

Grieving the loss of a loved one is difficult under any circumstances, but the effects of the ongoing coronavirus crisis have made grief even harder for many. Family members may have been isolated from their loved one and not had the chance for closure or saying their final goodbyes. If you are suffering a loss and are having difficulty coping with feelings and living without them, please allow a Stephen Minister to help carry this burden. You do not have to travel this difficult time alone. Call Kelly Gifford-316 708 0691 to be matched with a Stephen Minister.
Derby Food Pantry News 03/07/2022

Because of several very successful food drives this past week, the Derby Food Pantry has an abundant supply of food. They are requesting no more donations at this time. They appreciate the generosity of the Derby community and thank you for all your support. They will post a notice when the supply runs low and they again need donations. Thank You! If you have questions about the food pantry, call 316-519-5867.
Cookies Donations Welcome

The Hospitality Team welcomes donations of cookies for our Sunday morning coffee window. Cookie donations should be labeled for Coffee Window and can be dropped off in the church kitchen anytime during the week. Thanks so much!

Covid Restrictions Eased

As of 03/01/2022, Woodlawn’s Reopening Team has dropped most restrictions that had been implemented at Woodlawn during the Covid 19 pandemic because of the significant improvement locally in new case rates, hospitalizations and positivity test rates.  Though face masks are no longer required in the building, health officials emphasize that people should still wear face coverings if they wish or if they are personally at high risk and that regardless of local conditions, anyone should mask who has COVID-19 symptoms, a positive test, or has been exposed to someone with COVID-19.

Moving forward, the Woodlawn Reopening Team will factor in the Center for Disease Control’s new guidelines for assessing community risk, which weigh local hospital capacity more heavily than rates of new infections alone. Should Sedgwick county reach a “high” rating on the CDC county risk map, restrictions could be reinstated by the Reopening Team. Currently Sedgwick County’s risk is “medium.”

Joys, Prayers, and Concerns

Please continue prayers for Tom Smith. He has been moved from Wesley Medical Center to Via Christi Rehab in Wichita.

Please keep Jennifer Walker and family in your prayers. Her father, Dennis, had a mild heart attack on Tuesday morning.

Jean Anderson asks your prayers as she has tests run this Friday. She will get results April 1 so asks your prayers for calmness going into the tests, while awaiting results and that the results are good.

From Lois DeWitt: “Thank you so much for such a wonderful day this past Sunday! I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in the office and retire with mixed feelings. I am very excited stepping into a new period in my life and am very glad to know my church is with me. I so felt the love and care from all of you at my retirement celebration. The many cards and kind words are so special. I especially want to thank everyone for your generosity in my retirement gifts. I am truly enjoying the beautiful clock. My husband and I anticipate putting the new puzzle together. The money received through the love offering will help us with our vacation we are taking the first of April so many, many thanks to all of you for all your love, care and generosity!”

If you, or someone you know, has a joy, a concern, or just needs prayers, send to main@woodlawnumc.net or call the church office at 788-1507.
