Orange is the new red!

Changes to the COVID-19 traffic light protections framework may seem small to many of us, but it comes as a great relief to many.  It seems like more people are still either getting COVID-19 or are having to isolate. I hope everything is well at your workplace and in your home!

May will be a busy month for the volunteer sector with National Volunteer Week and the Volunteer Expo. Included in this month's edition is a timely article from Engage's journal about keeping volunteers safe.

Community and Whānau hosted Chris Allison from Health Action Trust in a session on "Avoiding Burnout". Please download the presentation notes here and you can view an excerpt of the session here (link valid until 11.59 pm 3 May).

Included in this month's edition is:
  • Volunteer Expo Saturday 25th June - registrations close today!
  • National Volunteer Week 19th - 25 June

Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu | National Volunteer Week is coming (19-25 June)

Theme: He wā whaiwhakaaro - a time to reflect He wā whakawhiti - a time to shine He wā moemoeā - a time to dream Framing: It’s a time to recognise and celebrate volunteers, a time to shine / whakawhiti.

This year, National Volunteer Week coincides with the new public holiday for Matariki (24 June). Matariki is the time many Māori and an ever-growing number of Tauiwi in Aotearoa and around the world gather family and friends and reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future.

This Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu / National Volunteer week, the theme is ‘Time to Shine / He wā whakawhiti.’  Let’s take the time to reflect / whaiwhakaaro on all those who give mahi aroha / volunteer for their communities. It’s a time to recognise and celebrate volunteers, a time to shine / whakawhiti. It’s Matariki, a new year and a fresh start; a time to dream / moemoeā and make plans for the future.

We will soon have a variety of graphics and templates for you to use. Here are a few teasers! What do you think of the theme and the link to Matariki? Could you use it for example to recognise your volunteer 'stars'? What resources would you like e.g. a customisable star graphic?

Resources will be available soon - follow this link

Tips for Volunteer Management

For many nonprofits, communicating with volunteers is not done as frequently or as effectively as we'd like it to be. However, good communication is key when it comes to running a nonprofit, and communication that is engaging, consistent and respectful lead to engaged, passionate and dedicated volunteers. In this week's edition of Volaby Voice, find out how to:

  • Communicate with your volunteers in a way that is effective and meaningful
  • Share updates that are engaging and transparent
  • Use volunteer feedback to streamline your communications strategy

  • Do you have concerns for your volunteers?
  • How do we create a safe environment for volunteering?
