So many projects and events and so little time! But here we go...
MOSSES AND MARSHES EXHIBITION PREP NOW UNDERWAY >> With the opening of the show at 6pm, 14 April at M16 Artspace, Canberra, preparations are cranking up. My special guest at the opening will be Terry Korn PSM, who I first met decades ago in roles with NSW Agriculture and NSW National Parks and Wildlife. He has intimate knowledge of the Marshes and a keen interest in social ecology amongst other things...and there's a quote from Terry in my major video work, An Ancient Land. MOSSES AND MARSHES M16 Artspace public exhibition dates are 15 April - 1 May. And a heads-up - you can catch the exhibition in Coonamble at the Outback Arts Gallery from 9 May.
With the countdown now, I'm preparing old iPads for the exhibition soundscapes, updating my headphone collection, and dusting off the second TV for the video Andrew Howe and I made—all the things that conventional galleries don't tend to provide for digital media artists. Promotions will be starting very soon, something M16 Artspace is great with, so stay tuned to my socials for updates and sneak peeks at what's ahead.

INHALARE STAGE 3 NOW UNDERWAY >> The Inhalare/breathe upon Stage 2 artists have now finished their visual responses to the soundscapes and texts they were given by Stage 1 artists. Preparations are now underway for the first showing of the works together with a range of accessibility elements including Audio Descriptions of the visual artworks, audio recordings of the text works and some tactile sensory elements. The exhibition is being curated and guided by accessible arts consultant and artist, Allison Reynolds, who is also director of SPACE Gallery in Coonabarabran. The exhibition will run from 15 May - 16 June at SPACE Gallery. The opening is 3pm, 11 June (June long weekend). More details to come on that.
The BIG news about the Inhalare project is that we received significant funds for a marketing campaign for the exhibition, called Take a Breath, promoting all ages and abilities access to the Inhalare works, targeted at visitors to Coonabarabran travelling through on the Newell Highway, or those making day trips to the area known as the gateway of the Warrumbungles. This grant will also cover Allison Reynold's role in the project as the accessible arts consultant and curator, greatly assisting us with what we wanted in terms of audience access to this work. We couldn't have done this without support for our application from Orana Arts, Accessible Arts, Destination Country and Outback and Warrumbungle Shire Council. We'll share more details about this as soon as we can.
Six special natural environments of NSW are being celebrated in sound, text and visual responses by 12 artists based in regional NSW. The exhibition of these works will be accessible to all ages and abilities. Stage 1 of this project is proudly supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW. Stage 2 has been supported with funding through the Australian Cultural Fund and ecoPULSE. Stage 3 has been successful in gaining significant financial public support for the development of a marketing campaign (details are unable to be released at this stage), with additional support from SPACE Gallery. This project is supported by Orana Arts and ecoPULSE.

NEW YEAR'S DAY FLASH PROSE HAS BEEN PUBLISHED >> The 250-word flash prose titled New Year's Day, that I submitted to the Walking Home writing competition through Walk Listen Create (WLC), was been shortlisted and published in an illustrated chapbook anthology, titled Walking. It's just been published and my copies are on their way to me. My piece about walking home on New Year's Day is the first story in the book. Copies can be purchased from Walk Listen Create's website for €4.99 +p&p (I think you need to login as a member to purchase them though). I've just ordered 5 more copies and there'll be a chance to win a signed copy in the next few months as part of a new project to get underway later this year. I'll be reading my New Year's Day at the Walk. Listen. Create. Sound Walk September event, along with the other shortlisted authors and poets...in September.

MARSHES SOUND WALK BOOKINGS NOW OPEN >> The bookings have started to roll in for the Macquarie Marshes Sound Walk event on 21-22 May. Places are limited. Bookings close 29 April if not before. Details including a map and a downloadable itinerary, plus a list of things you need to take note of, are on the ecoWALK page of the website. Please read these before you book.
Highlights include:
- Artist talk by Kim V. Goldsmith and Australian curator, Jamie-Lea Trindall, at the MOSSES AND MARSHES exhibition, Outback Arts, 2pm Friday, followed by a pub dinner in Coonamble
- 4 hours in the Marshes at Burrima on Saturday for a guided sound walk around the boardwalk, with time to explore on your own, and enjoy a picnic lunch
- Mid-afternoon birdwatching on Gibson Way, on the way to Warren
- Stop at the Window on the Wetlands Centre in Warren on our return to learn more about the wetlands and a late afternoon visit to the Tiger Bay Wetlands

MOSSES AND MARSHES BOOK AVAILABLE ONLINE AGAIN >> The book Andrew and I put together that documents the MOSSES AND MARSHES project, with various essays and community contributions, edited by Dr Liz Charpleix, will be given its Australian launch at the exhibition opening at M16 Artspace on 14 April, and will be available for sale at both the Canberra and Coonamble exhibitions between mid-April and early June. However, a limited number will also be available for online purchase through the ecoPULSE website. This is a limited edition publication and all copies purchased online or in-person are signed by me. See the link for more details.
The book layout clearly showed the thought processes behind collaborative artists on two sides of the world, while giving voice to those that live and work in the landscapes they were inspired by. It was a great read.

LEAD ARTIST FOR REGIONAL FUTURES PROJECT >> It was announced through social media late last month that I am a lead artist on an Orana Arts/ Arts Mid North Coast cross-region collaboration for the Statewide Regional Futures project. My role in the project has been supported by Dubbo Regional Council. I'll be working with Arts Mid North Coast lead artist, painter, poet and academic, Kit Kelen. We'll be working in self-directed residencies with two other artists who have been commissioned through a Regional Futures call out. Those artists are due to be announced on 11 April, along with more details of my part in the project.
Regional Futures is a two-year program of commissioning and conversations that places artists at the centre of a dialogue exploring a future vision for the place where they live and create. The provocation is What does the future look like for our regions? Orana Arts and Arts Mid North Coast have taken this one step further, keen to explore what a post-carbon future might be like for the regions. This is in light of major investments in renewables through Renewable Energy Zones (REZ) and what transitioning to a post-carbon economy will mean for future populations across the State. Regional Futures is managed by the NSW Regional Arts Network and funded by Create NSW.

To wrap up, I've been doing a 6-week Digital Transformations for Creative Industries course through UTS, developed in partnership with the Australia Council for the Arts. I applied to the course in late 2021 and then forgot all about it until I received an email before Christmas to say I'd been successful in gaining a subsidised place. It's been an interesting glimpse into the future of digital creative spaces and one of the key takeaways of the past few weeks has been a reminder that digital is only useful if it creates connections with people and is accessible. I do hope you feel connected with the projects and works I create in this space. I'm always keen for feedback about how it might be done better. So, please touch base if you'd like to share your thoughts at any point.
