25 MAR: HARMONY WEEK CELEBRATIONS, MEDIA MENTIONS, POLITICS IN THE PUB & MORE

CAMPAIGN UPDATE: WEEK 27

We are fortunate in North Sydney to be a vibrant community of people with many and varied skills, traditions, and dreams. Harmony Week this week was an opportunity to reflect on our multicultural nation: to celebrate the differences that enrich and strengthen us collectively, and to appreciate the values we share and this land we call home.

North Sydney truly is a cultural melting pot, with almost half (45%) of us born overseas, and 1 in 3 speaking a language other than English at home. At the Lane Cove Library's Diversitea celebration on Friday, we had people with Filipino, Korean, Chinese, Kenyan, Egyptian, Persian, and English backgrounds sharing their stories over morning tea - just to name a few. Uniting around this simple custom was pretty special. I know a cup of tea on its own won't bring world peace ... but it's a good start!

As your community Independent for Canberra, I have been actively reaching into cultural groups all across our electorate to hear their concerns and ensure I am able to represent our entire community in parliament. The #TeamTINK Diversity Team has been hard at work organising events, making introductions, and translating policy documents (thanks to those who answered our call for help last week!). I'm looking forward to meeting many more local families at our Community Yum Cha and Community Dinner events next month.

The last few years have felt more divisive than ever, but I know together, we can help bridge the gaps and make it right. Let's be the change we want to see, North Sydney. Together, we'll change the climate in Canberra.

In the News

  • 'The ‘diabolical’ event that has thrown this safe Liberal seat into doubt' - Sydney Morning Herald, 20 March. "Somebody said to me the other day ‘Trent’s no Tony Abbott’,” Kylea is quoted as saying. “I said ‘you know what, he’s not’ because at least with Tony Abbott you knew what you were getting. Love him or hate him, he talked the way he voted. We’ve got a guy who talks one way and votes like Barnaby Joyce or Peter Dutton or Matt Canavan."

  • 'Miners In Teslas: Episode 80 (Candidate Series)' - Daniel Bleakley, 23 March. Kylea puts the pedal to the metal in a Tesla Model 3 while discussing EVs, climate policy, Scandinavian family policy and the gender pay gap, the Federal Government's flood response, and how Independents will strengthen our democracy.

  • ''A different way of doing politics': Sydney independents reach out to voters' - The Guardian, 25 March. Investigative reporter Anne Davies reports that businesswomen have been particularly attracted to Kylea's campaign - like Allegra Spender's and Sophie Scamps'. One voter explains: "I think we need the independents to change the conversation and to change the agenda, not only for climate change but for so many other things as well."

Ron McCallum AO, Artarmon

Why do you want to change the climate in Canberra? My primary concern is Australia’s lack of action on climate change. I have been assisting my wife – Professor Mary Crock – with her refugee work for more than thirty years. I am ashamed of the lack of humanity towards refugees and asylum seekers by both major parties.

Ron McCallum is Emeritus Professor and former Dean of Law, University of Sydney. He is a past Chair of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Senior Australian for the year 2011 and an Officer in the Order of Australia. He has been blind since his birth.

NORTH SYDNEY'S INDEPENDENT

This week's refugee resettlement deal with New Zealand is an undignified cleaning out of the back of pantry by the LNP. The LNP Party Government's nine-year delay has caused such damage to the many human souls and bodies who have been unfairly imprisoned under their brutal refugee policy.

Rachel Withers asks the right question: "Who will be held accountable for the needless suffering, the years lost, the lives destroyed, and the billions in wasted costs that occurred thanks to the government's cynical delay?" We can't ever let a government without a soul or compassion run this country again.

Craig Foster's National Press Club speech this week comes most highly commended this week, as does Paul Dibb & Richard Dennis' unmissable speech on Ukraine/Russia.

#BackToBilo and all the others in detention, hold on, we see you, and are coming for you this election.
