INTERESTING HISTORY FACT: APRIL 15 IS TAX DAY

In the United States, Tax Day is the day on which individual income tax returns are due to be submitted to the federal government. Since 1955, Tax Day has typically fallen on or just after April 15. Tax Day was first introduced in 1913, when the Sixteenth Amendment was ratified. The filing deadline for individuals was March 1 in 1913 (the first year of a federal income tax) and was changed to March 15 in 1918 and again to April 15 in 1955. Today, the deadline remains April 15, unless it conflicts with on a weekend or a holiday. And now you know!

IN STORE EVENT: AUTHOR JUSTINE COWAN

We welcome author Justine Cowan to the store (date and time TBD). Justine is the author of the novel The Secret Life of Dorothy Soames.

Justine was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Growing up wandering through California’s majestic redwood forests, she became a passionate environmentalist, and has spent most of her career working to protect our nation’s natural resources.

She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.A. in Economics. She received her law degree with honors from Duke University School of Law, where she was a member of the Editorial Board of Duke Law Journal. She also served as a law clerk for the Honorable Robert L. Echols, United States District Court, Middle District of Tennessee. Justine has received numerous awards for her public service.

IN STORE EVENT: PETER ESSICK, PHOTOGRAPH AND AUTHOR OF FERNBANK FOREST

We will welcome Peter Essick to the store on April 27 (time TBD). Essick is a photographer and the author of Fernbank Forest, a photographic interpretation of Atlanta’s celebrated old-growth forest. The 65-acre forest managed by the Fernbank Museum of Natural History is known as the best example of an urban forest in the Piedmont region of the Eastern United States. The photo book focuses on the beauty and unique flora and fauna of the forest, and is the result of a commission from the Fernbank Museum to document the forest during a period of restoration and the reopening of the forest to the public. Fernbank Forest is a functioning old-growth forest in the heart of downtown Atlanta. Essick photographed the forest over a two-year period in all the seasons and during various weather conditions; his goal was to produce a personal vision of this natural ecosystem that can coexist with a large metropolitan city. For some of the photographs, a drone was used for perspective to see the canopy of the forest. Additionally, the book contains an essay by Janisse Ray about the forest, and by Emily Harrison, who grew up on a homestead in the forest and worked tirelessly to save the forest over 80 years ago. Emily Harrison was an environmentalist ahead of her time who believed that nature could be used to as a classroom for children. Janisse Ray is the author of Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, and has also written many other books and articles about the environment and forests of Georgia.
