Important Reminder:
Transition to SAM Unique Entity Identifier

Please review and share this information with your entity’s financial administrator.
Dear Grantees:

Please make sure your entity has a Unique Entity ID (UEI). Beginning April 4, 2022, the federal government will stop using DUNS numbers and start using Unique Entity Identifiers to identify entities registered for federal awards government-wide in the System for Award Management (SAM). After April 4, all DUNS numbers will be removed from SAM. Users will need their SAM UEI to search for entity registrations. Your UEI does not change after it is issued.
What is the Unique Entity ID?
If your entity is registered in SAM.gov you have been assigned a UEI, a 12-character alpha-numeric value. You can view the UEI in SAM.gov. SAM registration will continue to require annual renewal.
Are there resources to help through this transition?
The TFMC TA Team can help you locate your UEI if needed.  GSA and its Federal Service Desk have assembled the following resources and information on the topic:
  • Use this interactive PDF tool to get ready for when DUNS is replaced by UEI. This information is based on the type of work you do in SAM.
  • Read the UEI Fact Sheet, which provides information about the ongoing transition from DUNS to the SAM UEI.
  • Watch this video on how to get your SAM UEI without needing to complete an entity registration in SAM.gov
You can also access the new SAM Resources page on the Justice Grants website to learn more about the transition from DUNS to the new SAM UEI and what it means for you.
Why is this change occurring?
This change simplifies the process of registering an organization to do business with the federal government. Entities will no longer need to contact a third party to obtain an identification number or get support.
As a reminder, JustGrants uses SAM.gov as the primary source of agency information in applying for and managing DOJ grant funding. JustGrants automatically pulls entity information from SAM.gov, thereby reducing the burden on award recipients to manually update information across multiple systems, and helps DOJ validate information from recipients.

Please do not hesitate to contact TFMC with any questions or to request individual technical assistance by emailing TFMC@OVCTFMC.org or calling 703.462.6900. TA Specialists are available to assist.
