Central Colorado Mountain Riders - Update

Rainbow Trail Reroute.  USFS, BLM, and CCMR have worked to reopen the RBT segment closed by the 2016 Hayden Pass fire and rain events that demolished several miles of the trail.
The CCMR OHV Grant we submitted in 2020 was approved and is funded. We also submitted, and have been awarded, a Youth Corps OHV grant. We will use the Youth Corps to do the corridor chainsaw work ahead of the trail builder subcontractor. We will need CCMR volunteers to help hand clear the corridor as we did on the DudBob trail.
Our first workday will be 16 April.  This will be a walk-in workday - meeting up at the top of CR40 near Coaldale.  We will be hand clearing and flagging about 2.5 miles of the new trail.  For maps, directions and other details, please RSVP to Bob Daniel - CentralColoradoMountainRiders@gmail.com .
Porter Gulch to RBT Singletrack. The USFS is working on a new singletrack access point to the Rainbow Trail; an EA was released for public comment in January. CCMR supports another access point to the Rainbow for lots of reasons, including safety and search and rescue access; plus, it is a new short single track. CCMR and TPA submitted Letters of Support.

PSI Record of Decision. The Pike San Isabel National Forest (PSINF) Record of Decision Final Environmental Impact Statement was released in October 2020.

This was the result of a 2012
lawsuit claiming the USFS had not done the necessary Environment Assessments (EA) on hundreds of roads and trails within the PSI ranger districts.Still no resolution, but we hear it is close.
DudBob Singletrack. We are still working with Friends of Fourmile and now Stay the Trail on detailed DudBob and Triad Ridge maps showing obstacles and alternative routes.
New Board Member. We are pleased to announce that Jack Gordon, long-time Salida resident and rider, and all-around good guy, is now on the CCMR Board.of Directors Welcome Jack!
BOD Secretary Katie Kelly left the Board for a while to have her second baby. We will miss her but she promised to come back in a few years.  Emma Dunn is our new Secretary.  See Board members @  www.CentralColoradoMountainRiders/team.html .
CCMR Grants
CCMR submitted two Colorado Parks and Wildlife OHV grants for funding in 2023. We briefed them in March.
One grant is for Big Bend motocross track maintenance and equipment. CCMR provides a lot of maintenance on this track with borrowed equipment. This grant would allow us to purchase a tractor, water trailer, dirt, etc. to maintain the track and make it safer.
The second grant is for CCMR adopted trail maintenance. CCMR has formally adopted 50+ miles of singletrack. Some of our trails, like Poplar Gulch, need work that exceeds our normal workdays. We intend to use the grant to subcontract to professional trail builders for this work.

Texas Creek New Singletrack.  This project was shut down because of CPW’s concern for bighorn sheep lambing on the south end of our proposed trail. At our last CCMR-BLM meeting, we suggested changing the south end to avoid the sheep. We’ll try to rework this later this spring.
BLM Chaffee County Camping Plan and Travel Management Plan:  CCMR submitted a detailed review of this plan that proved to be more than a camping plan. The various BLM alternatives proposed closing up to 40% of the 4WD routes on BLM-managed land. Yes, we are primarily a singletrack club, but a lot of us use these routes. The review and commenting was tedious. We submitted 15-pages of comments. Subsequently, we met with BLM as they wanted to discuss our comments. We learned the BLM received 400 comments.

USFS Camping Plan: The USFS Salida and Leadville Ranger Districts released a Dispersed Camping Management Plan storyboard for comments on March 4th after they conducted a meeting with the local motorized clubs, including us.  CCMR will submit a general club response. Your public comments - due by April 4th - will help inform USFS with alternatives for camping management. Environmental Assessment will be released in the fall with a decision next winter.   More info and submit comments @  https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=60591
Meetings Attended:  Board members represented CCMR at the following meetings: Monthly Envision ERiB meetings; numerous meetings with Salida Mountain Trails on collaboration; the BLM OHV Semi-Annual Meeting in January; and the 3rd Annual Trail Preservation Alliance's Partner Club meeting in Grand Junction in March.

RMEC Enduro. At the BLM OHV meeting, we learned the Rocky Mountain Enduro Circuit (RMEC) applied for a BLM permit for an enduro in the Texas Creek OHV area. The Bull Gulch Enduro is on the RMEC schedule for October 9th. We shall see if the permit is approved.
Trail Work & Workdays. For planning purposes - we will be doing workdays in April for the Rainbow Trail Reroute - the first workday is April 16.  RSVP to Bob Daniels at CentralColoradoMountainRiders@gmail.com for maps, directions and details.
In August we will work on the Colorado Trail segment mud bog.  Plus, we plan to continue our third Thursday of the month workdays.
CCMR Adopted Trails

FYI, CCMR has adopted and helps maintain and clear the following trails:Additionally, we are working on a plan with the Colorado Trail Foundation and the USFS on the Colorado Trail section south of Marshall Pass to fix the mud bog at Headwater Hill (AKA Windy Point) next summer.  Stay tuned for workdays in August.  Individual trail maps @ www.CentralColoradoMountainRiders.com/adoptedtrails.html .
