HANOVER TROLLEY TRAIL NEWS
Construction set for later this spring.
Bids have been received for constructing the first section of new trail along the recently acquired dormant rail line. Although quite small at 0.3-mile, this project will showcase more miles of trail to come as the 8.5-mile rail corridor is transformed into a recreational trail. Beginning at South Pine Ave. in Spring Grove Borough, trail construction will follow the rail corridor, creating links to streetscaping improvements along Main and Railroad Streets, to Borough Park, and to the trolley trail that continues on to Hershey and Martin Roads. For additional information, contact YCRTA at (717) 428-0999 or info@yorkcountytrails.org.
Grants sought to support future phases of construction.
With more miles of dormant rail line just waiting for conversion to a trail, York County Rail Trail Authority continues to seek funding to support the rising costs of construction. Design and permitting from Spring Grove to Bair are near completion, providing the much-needed information to submit local, state and federal grants to support future phases of trail construction. Many thanks to York County Economic Alliance for a submittal earlier this year to the federal Economic Development Administration. And many thanks to Spring Grove Borough and Jackson Township for providing letters of support, and to the York County Board of Commissioners for providing $500,000 in American Rescue Funds to serve as the required match to a PA Department of Conservation & Natural Resources grant application to be submitted in April.

It takes a team to build a trail – and we extend our thanks to those on the Hanover Trolley Trail team!

Oil Creek Restoration design and permitting begins.
While visitors receive added enjoyment from traveling on a rail trail that parallels a creek, building trail beside a creek can be very risky business. Fast moving, high volumes of water present a challenge that can often lead to costly and repeated trail washouts.

To prevent this scenario along a section of the recently acquired dormant rail line in Heidelberg Township, LandStudies of Lititz, PA, is now designing and permitting restoration work along Oil Creek, funded through a PA Department of Environmental Protection grant. We extend appreciation to those landowners along the creek who view the restoration as providing value to their adjacent lands and have entered into agreements to work hand-in-hand with LandStudies to design improvements to the waterway. Thank you!
