As you may have heard, experts believe that Auckland is now past the peak of Omicron cases, this is great news for Aucklanders who have been through so much in the past 18 months. However, we must continue to remember and practice the basics such as staying home and testing if we are sick, wearing masks and washing hands. The rest of New Zealand has not yet reached its peak.

This week, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced changes to the traffic light system along with changes to the use of vaccine passes and vaccination mandates. You can read more about these changes below.

Announced changes
This week, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced a number of upcoming changes to the way Aotearoa manages Covid-19, these are:
  • From 11.59pm Friday 25th March, changes to the Traffic Lights will take place.
  • From 11.59pm this Friday 25 March QR scanning will no longer be required. Please keep the Covid-19 tracer app just in case it is needed in the future.

  • From 11:59pm on 4 April 2022, there will be no requirement to use My Vaccine Pass. Businesses can choose if they want to keep on using My Vaccine Pass.

  • From 11:59pm on 4 April 2022, some government vaccine mandates for workers will be removed. Businesses can choose to introduce workforce vaccination requirements if it's appropriate.
Mandates for these workers will stay in place:
    • health and disability sector workers
    • prison staff
    • border and MIQ workers.
If you test positive for Covid you and your household still
need to isolate at home for 7 days.
Changes to the Traffic Lights
From 11.59pm Friday 25th March, changes to the Traffic Lights will take place. Aotearoa can enjoy these changes because Omicron has been managed well and we have a high vaccination rate.

However, the country still stays at RED light settings for now.
The next review of the traffic light settings – what colour each of the areas of New Zealand sits in – will happen on 4th April.

The changes will allow some more freedom but still reduce the impact of Omicron and any further outbreaks.
The image below shows the changes that take place at each traffic light setting.
