Copperton Metro Township Awarded Grant

At the end of March, the MSD received news that Copperton Metro Township was awarded a grant from Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC) to complete its Active Transportation Plan and Connectivity Ordinance. If accepted, Copperton will receive $58,500 in funding from WFRC. The project stems directly from Copperton’s General Plan Work Program, which called for additional planning of walking and biking infrastructure as well as an ordinance to protect the community’s historic gridded street network.

Town of Brighton Hosts SKIMO Cup Race

The 20th Annual Wasatch Powder Keg Ski Races took place at the Brighton Ski Resort on March 19th and 20th. This year was the Youth National Championships as well as a USA Skimo Cup Series race.  More than 200 racers competed in this remarkable event and the Silver Fork Team did Brighton proud! Congratulations also to the Ski Mountaineering (Skimo) Team that hosted both of the events. Skimo will make its debut in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, probably with some locals vying for Olympic team positions.  Photos courtesy of the Town of Brighton.

MSD Digital Infrastructure Study

In 2021, the MSD received $50,000 of EDA CARES Act funding to complete a digital infrastructure study with its member communities. The project officially kicked off in February 2022, with the consultant analyzing available data related to broadband access and community assets. The Scope of Work for the project can be found here
All residents within Salt Lake County are invited and encouraged to participate in a 10-minute survey. The survey is designed to help the project team better understand resident digital connectivity needs and preferences. Questions address broadband infrastructure, device access, digital literacy, technical support, and more. For questions on the study or survey, please contact Kayla Mauldin (KMauldin@msd.utah.gov).

Magna: Candis Basin Improvement Project

Construction has been completed on the Candis Basin Improvement Project. Construction crews renovated and improved the existing retention basin located at 7373 W 3500 S in Magna. The basin did not function properly and was lacking capacity. The improvements included deepening and regrading the basin to proper capacity and installing an outlet structure for ease of maintenance and to regulate discharges. The construction of the project was completed on-time by Newman Construction under the direction of Salt Lake County and Magna engineers.

SLCo & Rio Tinto Partner to Improve Butterfield Canyon

The new partnership will expand trail and recreation options for equestrians, hikers, and mountain bikers in the southwest region of Salt Lake Valley

Salt Lake County Council approved a lease agreement between the county and Rio Tinto Kennecott for 17 acres of land in southwest Salt Lake County. This unique partnership will continue efforts by Salt Lake County to build a network of multi-user trails to improve access to Rose, Yellow Fork, and Butterfield canyons.
In partnership with Rio Tinto and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Salt Lake County will build 12 miles of new trails in areas where public access has previously been unavailable.

This lease agreement follows last week’s purchase of 94 other acres of open space in Butterfield Canyon and complements a recent acquisition of 50 acres that will serve as a trailhead to this system of trails. Together, these acquisitions are a critical part of Salt Lake County Parks & Recreation’s master plans to increase accessible, equitable, sustainable, and quality open space for everyone in the county.
“We are moving quickly and deliberately with many partners to make hiking, biking, and other recreation on our west bench trails a reality,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson. “We are grateful for the partnership with Rio Tinto Kennecott, Bureau of Land Management, Spencer Millerberg, and the stakeholder group. The collaborative efforts, a first of its kind for outdoor recreation, will provide residents and guests an enhanced outdoor experience in the southwest region of the county.”

“Providing 17 acres of land in Butterfield Canyon through our lease agreement with Salt Lake County will improve the recreational experience of community members for many years to come. Our hope is for more people to safely enjoy the outdoors and to appreciate them as much as we do,” said Managing Director Gaby Poirier, Rio Tinto Kennecott.

Now that the council approved the lease agreement with Rio Tinto, Salt Lake County Parks & Recreation has assumed stewardship of the acreage.

Celebrate Earth Day All Month Long

The MSD invites residents from across Salt Lake County to visit temporary Earth Day exhibits at participating County Library facilities (Kearns, Magna, Sandy, and Bingham Creek)! The exhibits share data on Utah’s drought status and provide helpful tips for residents to reduce their water consumption through adaptive landscaping. You can learn more about the exhibits and find online resources as bit.ly/msd-education.

The MSD would like to extend a huge thank you to Salt Lake County Libraries for allowing us to use their spaces for our Earth Day exhibits.

Pre-Spring Yardwork Saves Wildlife

The 2021/22 Utah winter has been colder than we’ve seen in a long while, however, we have had a few warms days when we can get outside and work on our yards. Please do not wait until late April, May, June, etc., to do some of the most important work in your yard.

Every year rehabbers receive hundreds of preventable wildlife patients that are either injured or orphaned due to untimely tree cutting, pruning and shaping.  Resources at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center are limited; we need to stretch the dollars out and reduce the unnecessary use for those patients who truly need it.

We ask that you NOT perform these tasks during the nesting/breeding season, typically from early APRIL through AUGUST.
WHY? This is the active season when thousands upon thousands of babies are born and hatched disturbing them usually ends in their death. It is hard to see nests when the trees/bushes are covered in leaves. Think of a small half dollar-sized hummingbird nest, or the finch or robin nest hidden in the crutch between a trunk/branch and another branch or branches … well, until the tree limb has crashed to the ground after cutting, you won’t see it … not until it is too late (death, injury, orphaned).

Tree trimmers are always looking for work in the “off-season,” the perfect time to avoid most wildlife interactions and to elude a nest full of eggs or young birds. We will have a few more warm days giving us time to get the yard work and trimming done before the leaves come in and the birds have nested.
