American Baptist College Slated
to Receive Funds from Congress's Spending Package

Several million dollars in funding could be coming to three North Nashville projects. It's part of a move by Congress to fund more community projects.
American Baptist College, in partnership with the Metro Historical Commission, will receive funds to restore buildings on the campus, where many notable Civil Rights leaders received their education and training, as well as create a complementary Civil Rights walking tour of the campus to educate the public about the College’s significance and role in the Civil Rights story.
Congressman Jim Cooper (TN-05), secured nearly $4.8 million in funding. The spending package must pass the Senate before landing on the President's desk to sign into law.

Richard Jackson, executive vice president at American Baptist College has been working with Congressman Cooper on the project to get funding for the buildings and further highlight ABC's Civil Rights history. “I am pleased to see this project moving forward and look forward to passage from the Senate,” said Jackson.
For the first time in more than a decade, members of Congress were able to submit specific requests for their districts. Rep. Cooper selected two schools and one major project all to strengthen the North Nashville area.
American Baptist College, Meharry Medical College, and the Jefferson Street Interstate Cap project will split the funds.

The 64th Annual Garnett| Nabrit Lectures presented outstanding lecturers, scholars, pastors, speakers, educators, preachers, the lay and aspiring faith leaders, who touched the attendees in a special way. They were inspired and encouraged.
Students performed cultural expressions throughout the two-day event., and senior Mikea Braden closed the event with a powerful prayer.

Approximately 25 high school students and six chaperones toured the ABC campus on last Friday, March 18, as part of the Investing In My Future (IIMF) initiative. IIMF assists students and parents to prepare for life beyond high school by equipping and empowering them with the tools that help them navigate post-secondary education.

Street Named After ABC Board Member

HBCU Day On The Hill
American Baptist College is One of Seven

The Fourth Annual HBCU Success Day on the Hill took place Wednesday, March 9, at the Cordell Hull Building at the State Capitol.
The annual event sponsored by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission was a day-long activity focused on strengthening the partnerships between state agencies and Tennessee’s seven HBCUs.
Brittany Mosby, director of HBCU Success said, “The focus of this year’s event was on encouraging state agencies and HBCUs to come together, break down silos, and consider new ways of working and collaborating for the benefit of student success.
"We were very pleased with the representation from the departments of Health, Human Services, Economic and Community Development, and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, as well as from our HBCUs — American Baptist College, Fisk University, Knoxville College, Lane College, LeMoyne Owen College, Meharry Medical College, and Tennessee State University.” The seven HBCU institutions are noted as having a history of excellence. Mosby added, “I am looking forward to the follow-up conversations to be had, and to keeping the positive momentum of the event moving forward for Tennessee’s HBCUs.”
This was the fourth annual HBCU Day, and this year’s theme was “Leveraging Collaboration for Statewide Excellence."
“It was a productive exchange between staff at the state agencies and the HBCU representatives to further engage in productive partnership opportunities,” said Dr. Phyllis Qualls, vice president for Institutional Advancement.

2022 MLK Joint Day of Service
|
|
|
The MLK Joint Day of Service brings together hundreds of student volunteers from Nashville-area colleges and universities to continue the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through service. The keynote speaker will be Georgia State Senator Sonya Halpern.
The day of service will take place Saturday, April 2, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. CT, beginning at Tennessee State University in Gentry Center.
After the opening program, volunteers will relocate to different service sites. Lunch will be provided. Register to volunteer at vu.edu/serviceday2022.
This day of action, inspired by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was organized collaboratively by American Baptist College, Belmont University, Fisk University, Lipscomb University, Meharry Medical College, Nashville State Community College, Tennessee State University, Trevecca Nazarene University, and Vanderbilt University.
