DV's Desk

I write this on a beautiful spring-like day in late March.  Spring and fall are tied for my two favorite seasons of the year.  I love to hear the birds sing and to see buds burst into flowers.  There is something powerfully uplifting about the change of seasons.  After the cold and dark of winter, spring breaks forth all around us with signs of new life.  The flowers and the birds remind me of the goodness of God’s creation.
Spring is a fitting metaphor for you and me as followers of Jesus.  Jesus’ resurrection is the ultimate promise that there is new life with God.  Jesus’ victory over sin and death is our victory.  In the words of the great Wesley hymn, “made like Him, like Him we rise!”  Sin and death no longer have the final word.  There is now the hope of new and unending life with God.
We are an Easter people who live in that hope.  So great is this news that we get fifty days to celebrate the joy of Easter.  The liturgy reflects our joy as the “A” word returns.  “Alleluia!  Alleluia!” will be our song in response to the Opening Acclamation and to The Dismissal from Easter day until Pentecost.

Faithfully Yours,
Dawn-Victoria+

Mark Your Calendars

Bishop DeDe will be at St. Mark’s on Tuesday, 10 May to officially welcome Dawn-Victoria as our new Priest-in-Charge.  St. Mark’s Renewal of Ministry will be at 6pm.  During the service we will offer Dawn-Victoria symbols of her ministry with us and renew our Baptismal ministries as St. Mark’s.  A reception is being planned for after the service.  We hope that you will join us for this special service.

The Feast of St. Mark’s

Monday, 25 May is a special day.  The Feast of St. Mark, our patron saint.  A service of Holy Eucharist will mark (pun intended) the day.  Join us at 6pm as we celebrate the Apostle and Evangelist, as well as our parish.  A potluck supper will follow in the Undercroft for those who wish to join us.
The following tidbit comes from Wikipedia: “Mark the Evangelist (Latin: Marcus; Greek: Μᾶρκος, Romanized: Mârkos; Hebrew: מִיכָה, Micah) is the traditionally ascribed author of the Gospel of Mark.  Mark is said to have founded the Church of Alexandria, one of the most important episcopal sees of early Christianity.  His feast day is celebrated on April 25, and his symbol is the winged lion.”
Scholars consider the Gospel of Mark the earliest of the four Gospels accounts of Jesus’ life and ministry.  Mark’s Gospel was written to strengthen the Christians who were being persecuted in Rome, encouraging them to stand strong in their faith.
