Dear friends,

After some problems with our old web hosting, we have finally been able to update the Eye website to include the last issue, Eye 102. Which is cause for a certain amount of celebration here in the Haggerston Riviera. (For the past few months we’ve only been able to edit pages such as Events and Stockists, while the website was held together with string and duct tape, so it’s good to be back.)

We’re all still on a high from the thrill of hosting a real-life Type Tuesday earlier this month. We had a full house at St Bride Library in London for presentations by reportage illustrator Lucinda Rogers, graphic designer Greg Bunbury and poet, activist and letterpress artist Dennis Gould (above), all of whom will feature in the forthcoming Eye 103. Our next Type Tuesday event will be at St Bride on 7 June 2022.

The Eye Events page is full of details about forthcoming things to see and do, including ‘Posters for The Tokyo Olympiad’ at the Poster House in NYC (from 7 April 8 to 9 Oct), and ‘Same, But Different’, an evening event about book cover design at St Bride that features nine book designers, including David Pearson (see ‘Inside out’ in Eye 78) on 7 April.

And MagCulture Live (featuring Richard Turley, see Eye 100, and many other great editorial minds) will be returning to New York on Sun May 22.

For more real-life events (and some nice virtual ones, too), please head for the Eye Events page. If you are organising an event, presentation or exhibition that you think will interest Eye readers, please contact my colleague Gabriela.

Our website is packed with articles worth reading for fresh perspective on the evolution of graphic design. For example: Elizabeth Glickfeld’s interview with Melbourne designer Stuart Geddes in Eye 92; Jim Northover’s ‘The first couple of American billboards’ about Otis and Dorothy Shepard (above) in Eye 89; and Patrick Baglee’s ‘Fry like a spy’ (see below) in Eye 87, the food design special.

Apariciones, 2012-13, an installation by Said Dokins, who took part in Typographics 21: Session 1, reviewed in Eye 102 by Elena Veguillas.

You may or may not know that our website has been virtually impossible to edit for the past four months, which meant that we were unable to add any information about the latest issue apart from the ad banner locations. (Happily, we were also able to update the Events page.)

So I’m happy to report that (thanks to the help of some wonderful web designers and developers) eyemagazine.com is now back up to speed again – with the enormous Eye archive safe – and that we have published all the Eye 102 ‘Global type tour’ reports from ‘Typographics 21’ in full, along with links to the YouTube presentations by this amazing array of type and lettering practitioners from around the world – excluding Europe and North America.

You can see the full contents list of Eye 102 here.

And this means that we can start publishing blog posts once more. The most recent entry is Books Received no. 48 (above), which covers three titles: the Italian-language Manuale di Calligrafia from the Associazione Calligrafica Italiana, plus Sign Painting by Mike Meyer & Friends and Meyer’sThe Showcards Book  published by Better Letters.

And you can again read ‘Silent sound’ about Chris Bigg’s Analogue Process 1987 – 2019 (below), a hymn of praise to ink on paper.

Please mark your diaries with our next Type Tuesday on the evening of 7 June 2022 at St Bride (and as always in support of the St Bride Foundation) by which time Eye 103 will have reached our subscribers and magazine stores worldwide and we will be busy preparing for Eye 104.

If you are not already an Eye subscriber, we hope you will consider supporting us by clicking here, or calling the Eye shop at 020 7684 6530. And if you are an Eye subscriber, please let us know when you move house or studio, by emailing subscriptions@eyemagazine.com to change your details on our database (or log into ESco with your customer number).

Best wishes from the Eye team: me, Simon, Janet, Holly and Gabriela

John L. Walters, editor
