New Diocesan Director Of Education

The Diocese of Carlisle has appointed a new Director of Education to lead its team supporting 104 church schools across the county.

Charlotte Tudway – the current Deputy Director of Education – will take over the role next month from Vanessa O’Dea, who earlier this year announced she is to move on from the post.

Charlotte said: “I am delighted to have this opportunity to build on the strong relationships we already enjoy with colleagues across Cumbria and beyond.

“I am absolutely committed to supporting our family of schools which have a distinctive character and role at the heart of our communities.  These are exciting times in the world of education, full of challenge and opportunity. I am looking forward to playing my part.”

           Ukraine Support Grows

Churches across the county continue to look at ways in which they can support Ukrainian refugees, as latest figures from the United Nations suggest 10 million people have been displaced.

A number of meetings have been held in Cumbria - including 60 people gathering together as part of the Eden Wild Goose Ukraine Sanctuary - to consider how best people could be hosted.

Meanwhile, a small team from Gateway Church in Kendal is to head for Romania next month, to support refugees in the country. They are currently fundraising for their mission and also looking for help from a Ukrainian translator.

Churches continue to be signposted to a Church of England ‘toolkit’ of resources for parishes seeking to help refugees and evacuees from Ukraine in the wake of the Russian invasion of the country.

National Day Of Reflection

Churches across Cumbria have marked the National Day of Reflection which took place yesterday (Wednesday 23 March) - the two year anniversary of the UK's first Covid lockdown.

The day was coordinated by the charity Marie Curie and officially supported by the Church of England, and provided a time to reflect together on loss and grief.

St Mark's Natland was lit up in yellow from 8pm, with congregation members having held a minute's silence before a Lent Lunch and later holding a Service of Remembrance.

The Rev Canon Peter Clement used the theme of the Day of Reflection when leading a service at St Andrew's Penrith and there was a memorial service with afternoon tea at St Thomas Kendal on Sunday, with prayer stations set up around the church.

  Emergency Thanksgiving - 999 Call

An emergency services thanksgiving at the weekend was interrupted when one of the crews present had to answer a 999 call.

An RNLI crew were called out just as the service - also attended by the county's Deputy Lord-Lieutenant, High Sheriff and Police and Crime Commissioner - was about to begin at St Bee's Priory on Sunday 20 March.

The service saw tributes paid to the dedication and devotion of all those in the county's emergency services - both paid and volunteers. The RNLI team arrived back in time to enjoy tea prepared by the Priory congregation. A collection of £225 was donated to the DEC Ukraine Appeal.
