Olive Oil

A compound called oleocanthal is found in extra virgin olive oil and works similarly to an anti-inflammatory drug. Anti-inflammatory diets are commonly recommended for people struggling with neurodegenerative diseases and others who want to improve brain functioning.

Avocados

Our brains are the fattiest organ in the body meaning that in order for them to function properly they need to be provided the right fats. Avocados are rich sources of healthy fats which help boost our brain’s processing speed if absorbed properly.

Blueberries

These little fruits are packed with flavonoids, making them a great antioxidant. Flavonoids are a compound found in many of our brain boosting foods and these specific flavonoids have been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier and assist in signaling parts of the brain that handle memory.

Wild Salmon

Consumption of wild fish has been studied and associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer and more. More specifically, salmon is a rich source of EPA and DHA omega-3 fats that benefit the functioning and processing of our brains.

Almonds

The high concentration of omega 3 essential fatty acids have been tested in early studies that consuming higher amounts of omega 3 could associate with a decreased risk for dementia. Serving sizes suggest 5 to 10 almonds a day.

5 Facts You Didn't Know about Parkinson's

Parkinson’s Disease isn’t predictable. The variability of symptoms and the speed of progression changes from person to person. However, by staying fit, getting proper sleep, and nutrition the patient can slow the progression of symptoms.

Parkinson’s Disease symptoms are not always tremors or changes in motor functions. These symptoms are referred to as invisible symptoms and include but are not limited to: lack of sleep, early satiation, mood disorders, and cognitive changes like speech or slowed processing.

More men than women are diagnosed with Parkinson’s by a ratio of nearly 2:1. Women tend to have later onset of symptoms than men. Women also tend to have differences when presenting symptoms than men. Davis Phinney foundation suggests that women with Parkinson’s Disease join a women's only support group.

According to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, a possible issue with Parkinson’s is people may have issues regulating their internal temperature. Because of this, symptoms can increase in extreme hot or cold weather, which can cause issues with quality of sleep. Extreme cold can also come with increased time in the dark, which can increase symptoms related to mood disorders.

There is a Parkinson’s podcast! Podcasts are a great way to get information when reading is difficult. The Davis Phinney Parkinson’s Podcast discusses Parkinson’s basics, how to talk to others about Parkinson’s, and more! If you know someone with Parkinson’s Disease this would be a great resource to try and understand what they are going through and how to help.
