Jovenes Adelante’s English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Tutoring Program needs English-speaking volunteers to provide our students with extra support in developing their English language skills. With a time commitment of only an hour a week for three months, you can work one-on-one or in small groups, in person or remotely, to help JA students improve their listening, speaking, pronunciation, and conversation skills.

The English Tutoring Program is not intended to replace formal English as a Foreign Language class, but rather to provide extra practice in learning an additional language. We match EFL Tutors with students who want to practice English with a proficient English speaker. Being a tutor requires flexibility in your approach to student learning and a recognition of individual learning styles. It is great if you have a working knowledge of Spanish, but this is not necessary in order to participate in the tutoring program. The students’ oral proficiency levels range from beginning to advanced.

JA Student Gema explains what she enjoys about her tutoring experience:

I have lost the fear of making mistakes. Now I have better focus and attention when in a conversation and I speak a little more fluently.

What started out in 2021 as a pilot project with a handful of tutors working in person here in San Miguel and remotely from Canada and the USA, has started to grow. Our EFL Coordinator, Betty Ann Taylor, who herself tutored remotely for 6 months from Toronto, Canada is eager to bring more volunteers on board.

The final words belong to JA student Alfredo.

Months after finishing my high school studies, I felt that my level of English had decreased considerably, not so much in grammar, reading or writing, but in fluency and communication in real time with English speakers. This happened because during the summer vacation before entering university, I did not have anyone to practice English with.
Fortunately, shortly after I was accepted into Jovenes Adelante, I was assigned a group with an English tutor and the situation improved. Our English tutor, has made us feel totally confident to practice and learn, well every week. We meet virtually and talk as a group of colleagues on different topics. We share our learnings, we talk about likes and interests, we discuss global current issues, and we carry out various dynamics to keep each session interesting, all in English.
