Holden Evening Prayer

Tonight, we gather at 6 pm in the sanctuary or on Zoom to sing Holden Evening Prayer, followed by a soup supper in Fellowship Hall.

Holden Evening Prayer is a beloved musical setting of a traditional Vespers (Evening Prayer) service.  It was written by well-known Lutheran composer Marty Haugen while he was visiting Holden Village in the winter of 1986.  Holden Village is a Lutheran retreat center in the northern part of the Cascade Mountain Range in Washington state.  It is a popular location for spiritual renewal activities for Lutheran pastors, students, families, and congregations.  Pastor Allison was lucky to spend all of Holy Week in 2018 in this beautiful, cozy oasis.  Every evening at Holden Village, the community gathers for Evening Prayer, which usually includes song, prayer, art, and various forms of creative worship.  Holden Evening Prayer is still sung regularly at Holden, as well as in Lutheran congregations across the country.

Updated COVID Guidelines

In light of new CDC guidelines, the Metro Chicago Synod has published new COVID guidelines.  Though the synod allows for masks to be optional, our Re-Entry Team has elected to continue requiring masks for worship for the time being.  This is to honor the preference of many of our families.  However, all worship leaders, including cantors/song leaders, will now be allowed to remove masks while leading.  The congregation will remain masked and socially distanced from leaders.

Masks are now optional for all other activities at St. John's, with the exception of youth programing, which will continue to require masks.  If you have any questions or concerns about this policy, please contact the church office.
Lenten Daily Devotional
This vibrant, powerful Lenten devotional was prepared by Chicago-area clergy who practice sacred organizing as part of the Faith Liberation Movement of The People's Lobby.  There is a reflection for every non-Sunday day of Lent.  Paper copies may be picked up at church.
