Welcome to the Some Things newsletter curated by designer & artist Ngaio Parr

The world gets even sadder and I'm working on two polar opposite but both excellent projects that are stretching my brain — so more lo-brow content this edition!

IN THE STUDIO

Listen to me chat with Kaylene on Startup Creative about the studio, the grief companion, and the power of creative friendships.

I designed Kaylene's book How To Start A Side Hustle, and found out yesterday that the entire series has been nominated for an ABDA Award

Also thrilled to finally be able to tell you all about the beautiful album I designed for the incredible Baby Velvet — custom hand stitching, beautiful photography and royal blue vinyl! I was lucky enough to listen to Hannah while she crated some of the songs for this record and it is a thing of beauty.

READ

Amnesia in exchange immortality, except it is the rest of the world that forgets you? Really enjoyed The Invisible Life Of Addie LaRue.

Jessica Stanley's first novel A Great Hope is such a treat — the complex character building had me switching alliances back and forth as the story unfolds.

How Capitalism Took Hold of Graphic Design, and How to Escape from It.

Songs on: hating fame, surviving death, teen angst, tasting a memory, exhaustion.

Am I watching a Dad Thriller right now?

Why do we create goals by thinking instead of feeling? And how do we unravel them to find our true motivations?

LOOK & LISTEN

Apologies but goth Batman is my favourite superhero — Edward Cullen's final form. See also: a little playlist to remind you that no matter how much colour you’ve integrated into your wardrobe, you’re still a little goth girl.

Stuck on your design? Have a spin through these oracle cards.

This Is Not A Drill: Maya Rudolph's Prince cover-band Princess is playing a gig (LA). A taster.

The most incredible looking cakes I've ever seen.

Mutual admiration, camaraderie or rivalry: the beauty of an artist trade. This article reminded me that I should do this more often too!

If I was quick enough I'd have been snapping up one of these at Kyle Montgomery's show.

A podcast about Australia's decades long denial of climate change.

BUY & EAT

My most wonderful friends Stefan and Vanessa lost their home in the Northern Rivers Floods, but thanks to the support from the community they’ve been able to get back on their feet. They are such good eggs that they are paying it forward fundraising with their beautiful art prints — with 100% of the profits going to the Flood Relief Fund dedicated to community-led recovery. Go and buy a print from these legends or donate directly to the fund!

I've been working so much the past few weeks that I've been eating very basic — but this compilation of recipes is waiting for me at the end of the tunnel. Tikka masala soup, perfect butter mochishepherd’s-style pasta with ricotta, pecorino and guanciale, passionfruit pavlova (I've been making these for US friends and can't wait to try Bre's recipe), and white borscht.

Thanks for reading! This newsletter is free, but if you’re feeling generous you can support my work by forwarding it to a friend, ordering The Grief Companionbuying me a coffee, or referring me for a project. I'm taking on new clients and collaborating with studios and brands near and far — maybe that could be you?
