If you would like to be invited to attend future webinars, which  are taking place quarterly, please email Caitlin Yeoman on Caitlin.Yeoman@health.govt.nz. These webinars intend to provide news of recent developments, information about planned activity from the Ministry of Health and strategic vision for both the Allied Health, Scientific and Technical and wider Health and Disability workforces.

Health workforce surges during Omicron

The following message comes from the Ministry of Health:

High numbers of Omicron cases have created the need for a wide range of workers on the ground to care for whānau who need to isolate at home in both frontline and back-office roles.

The Ministry of Health has created two pages with information about how to find or offer help during this time:

  • A page for employers where you can list jobs, or find available people to fill vacancies, the majority of which are free to use
  • A page for workers with a list of places to look for jobs, or to put yourselves forward for future opportunities.

All services listed operate New Zealand-wide, the majority of them are free to use, and they include services for Māori and Pacific workers, and people who qualify for individualised funding and are looking for in-home care.

Please share our COVID-19: Surging the health workforce page to anyone who may be interested.

Temporary medical exemption changes

The following message comes from the Ministry of Health:

We have introduced some changes to the temporary medical exemption process for people who either have or have recently recovered from a COVID-19 illness, and as a result may be unable to receive a COVID-19 vaccination or booster vaccination due to their COVID-19 illness

This also includes a group application for PCBUs (Employers).

The change is covered by category 1A of the temporary medical exemption criteria. Temporary medical exemptions accepted under category 1A will last for 12 weeks from the date the application is considered.

The group application process is for PCBUs (employers) who have 2 or more workers who need to apply for a temporary medical exemption because of a COVID-19 illness.

The group application form can be found here: https://www.health.govt.nz/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-response-planning/covid-19-mandatory-vaccinations/covid-19-exemptions-mandatory-vaccination#applying-tempmed

The group application form must be signed off by a Medical or Nurse Practitioner.

The PCBU must confirm with the workers that the application is being made and receive their consent. No individual workers will need to sign the application form.

The practitioners who sign off on the group application will need to verify the positive PCR or Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) results and be satisfied that these belongs to each individual covered by the application.

This may take the form of sighting a screen shot of a My COVID Record that displays the PCR or uploaded RAT result, a hard copy of a laboratory report, or a text notification of the positive test result.

The processing time for these medical exemptions is 5 working days or less.

We will contact each person who is part of the application separately, as well as the PCBU on the outcome of the application.

If you have individual workers who need to apply for an exemption, this can be done through their own Medical or Nurse practitioner. Details of this are at: https://www.health.govt.nz/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-response-planning/covid-19-mandatory-vaccinations/covid-19-exemptions-mandatory-vaccination#applying-tempmed

Te Tiriti-based Futures + Anti-Racism: free online event, 19-28 March

Te Tiriti-based futures + Anti-racism 2020 was an innovative (inter)national, online and offline, Te Tiriti-based, anti-racism and decolonisation event in Aotearoa. Now, the organisers are proud to announce Te Tiriti-based futures + Anti-racism 2022.

There is once again an incredible line up of speakers and leaders who over 10 days will discuss topics including institutional racism and anti-racism, decolonisation, building Te Tiriti-based futures and transforming our constitution. Overseas presenters will also discuss their experiences with these issues from their contexts.

The final day will be different this year. It will be a platform for emerging voices called "Kei te mura o te ahi. Marathon for racial justice", powered by PechaKucha: an epic marathon of short interactive talks from students and recent graduates pushing the boundaries in anti-racism in Aotearoa and internationally.

After the event, most of the open-access webinars will be posted online, where they will become permanent resources for anti-racist activism and Te Tiriti education.

The organisers are a group of Māori and Tauiwi with experience in activism, research and community development. With your help, they hope that Te Tiriti Based Futures + Anti-Racism will continue to be a biennial event.

NZAP online conference, 1-3 April

AHANZ member, the New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists is celebrating its 75th anniversary with an exploration of how we bring psychotherapy with us into the future in Aotearoa.

In Te Ao Māori, time is conceived as circular rather than linear. Ka mua, ka muri. Each new day falls down towards us. As we walk backwards into the future, we look to the past to understand what is needed in the present.

Our 2022 Conference, "Ka mua ka muri", is an online event, open to members and non-members alike. We have an exciting and assorted programme; national and international speakers will be stirring up our thinking on time and its vicissitudes. We have poetry, reminiscence, current affairs, and a look into the future. The programme offers both space for group and individual reflection.

Please share this invitation with your colleagues, students friends and whanau.

Registration is $175 for non-members. Register here
