Dear all,

There is so much going on in the world at the moment, isn't there? Our hearts and prayers go out to countries under attack, refugees those trapped in slavery and the homeless. How can the Christian faith speak into such contexts? Part of the answer, I hope, is found in this newsletter. Members of the JPIC and Mission teams are continuing to keep you abreast of wider partnerships and opportunities that you (and your parish) may wish to adopt. Our intention is not to overwhelm you or make expectations upon congregations and clergy who are working so hard already. Instead, we know you have a passion for God's work and are engaged in it. One of the resources below might help you in this. So, do take a read right through to the end.

My colleagues across the team and diocese provide further info (through newsletters and social media), so do check these out. However, I trust this is a help. Let's continue to encourage one another in love and good works. (Hebrews10:24).    Jay
JPIC Update: Ukraine

We are all appalled and saddened by what we are seeing on the news of people fleeing fighting in Ukraine, or living in what are siege situations. People have been getting in touch to ask what they can do to help.  Read our blog for some suggestions (this is being updated regularly as the situation changes): Ukraine: What Can I Do to Help?

If you are thinking about accommodating refugees, please register for our online event on 24th March on Zoom

Five energy-saving tips for churches

With the expected increase in heating and electricity bills it is now more important than ever to make sure you are doing everything you can to reduce your energy usage. These energy management tips are very simple – the sort of things you try to do at home to reduce your own energy bills just on a larger scale.
  1. Stop the draught!
  2. Put that light out!
  3. When do we turn the heating off?
  4. An energy audit
  5. Organise an end of day switch off

CYP: Woolwich Youth Forum

At the end of February, the CYP Team put together an event for the young people of churches across the Woolwich Episcopal Area. The theme was ‘Together’ for the purpose of gathering young people, especially at a time where they are perhaps thinner on the church ground, for them to connect with each other, know that they are part of something much bigger and that they’re not alone in their journey of faith. The event was the result of a conversation with the young people about their thoughts and desires for the group and was well received by the young people and leaders who attended. There was a great buzz and Bishop Karowei was on top form and loving being in the presence of young people once more.

The forums are a place where the voices of young people can be heard by senior leadership, and at Diocesan level, on issues that matter to them. It invites young people in year 9 and above to speak into the life of the church and seems to particularly appeal to churches with smaller youth groups so that their young people can connect with others. If you have young people in this age group who would like to share their thoughts alongside others, please have their parents complete a permission form to join us for the next one. Most of them happen online up to 3 times a year. For more information, please contact Keli. Here are the permission forms for each area: Woolwich | Croydon | Kingston

CPAS book giveaway

What if evangelism was a ministry of the whole church, not just a few?

What if it was central to the life of a church rather than something done on the margins?
What if it was part of the 'way we do things around here'?

CPAS has produced a new resource to help church leaders shape the culture of their churches to be more evangelistic. Focused around seven core shifts and seventy simple ideas, this book offers a framework for culture change, and creative, doable and practical ideas to order and mobilise church communities around faith sharing, so that evangelism is increasingly about ordinary people in their everyday lives sharing their faith in simple ways.

Author of the book, James Lawrence says, "This book is for leaders of church in all its shapes and forms—urban, rural, multi-parish benefices, church plants and Fresh Expressions such as Messy church (and Sweaty church, Forest Church and Café church too!). We’d love to get this book into the hands of as many church leaders as we possibly can. Research shows that small shifts in the way we shape church life and culture can bring about big change—if every leader was inspired by just one of these ideas, and implemented it in their church, we could see many, many more people coming to faith in Christ."

To find out more watch this short video. How to Nurture a Faith-Sharing Culture can be purchased at www.cpas.org.uk/faith-sharing (paperback £8.99, PDF £6.75). CPAS is giving away 3,000 copies to leaders of Anglican churches, Fresh Expressions or church plants in the UK and Ireland. Visit the link above to find out more.
