The March Chase & Chalke Newsletter

Community Poetry Residency Application has been extended!

Our Chase & Chalke Community Poet Residency is open for applications, and we have extended the deadline from the 21st March to the 28th March.

We're seeking applications from poets and writers with experience working with communities or schools. Applications must be received by 5pm on Monday, 28th March.

This is part of our 'Words in the Landscape' project, which aims to bring together readers, writers, poets and tellers of tales to celebrate the written and spoken word, and to connect people to the landscape.

The successful applicant will organise creative writing workshops for community groups and schools to inspire adults and children to write about the landscape. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to create new works of their own and help us plan a Creative Writing Competition and a ‘Festival of Words’ (scheduled for 2023).

Please follow the link below for the full residency brief and information. Please share so that interested people will be able to apply!

Watch: Flag Making Documentaries featuring ‘In Jolly Good Company’

Film maker Guilia Franchi documented the flag making process undertaken by ‘In Jolly Good Company’ as they designed and made their flag during sessions at Wimborne St Giles with Artist Nicola Davis.

Guilia edited and produced two beautiful films - the first video documents the session in which the group came up with designs for their flag. The second video documents the final making of the flag.

We’re delighted to be able to share these videos with you, which allow us to witness the flag making process.

The flag making workshops are part of our Chase & Chalke ‘Celebration in Silk’ project. For more information about the project visit https://cranbornechase.org.uk/chaseandchalke/celebration-in-silk.

During March, April and May last year, in the middle of a Covid-19 lockdown, the Chase & Chalke Landscape Partnership created the ‘Chase & Chalke Talks’ with the help of our amazing partners and contributors.

The talks are a series of online presentations and discussions on a wide range of fascinating themes and topics that relating to the many varied projects of the Chase & Chalke Landscape Partnership Scheme.

We were very pleased that over 1000 people joined us for these virtual talks which took place on Monday evenings, and we’re delighted to say these are now available for everyone to watch and enjoy on our YouTube Channel.

Space Detective Sessions at Fontmell and Shaftesbury Schools

As part of our Chase & Chalke ‘Starry, Starry Nights’ project, children at St Andrews Primary School in Fontmell Magna and Shaftesbury Primary School enjoyed a hands on workshop with the wonderful Jo Richardson of Space Detectives and an ESERO-UK Space Ambassador.

The children loved exploring the night sky with some basic astronomy, and crucially discovering why our dark skies are so important. We hope they will share this with their families and all work together to protect our dark skies for their future.

Further ‘In the Night Sky Workshops’ led by Jo Richardson will be available as part of the ‘Starry Starry Nights’ projects in autumn 2022.

The sessions are ideally aimed at key stages 2-3. If your school would be interested in hosting a workshop, please get in touch with Rachel Limb, Heritage and Community Engagement Officer - please email rachellimb@cranbornechase.org.uk to register your interest.
