Italian Delite

Located on Main Street in Trappe, Italian Delite Pizzeria and Restaurant was recommended by a friend about a year ago and we finally made a visit. Housed in the space formerly occupied by the satellite location of Norristown’s Lou’s Sandwich Shop (Lou’s Too”) in 2018, it has quickly built a fan following. Those passing by could look at Italian Delite and expect a run of the mill pizza shop, but the full parking lot on evenings signals that this dining spot is more than that.

The Tosco family has been in the restaurant business for over forty years and previously operated Italian Delite’s in King of Prussia (closed 2007) and Broomall (closed 2018).  The latest iteration in Trappe opened in late 2018 and is operated by the Tosco family headed by the owner’s culinary-schooled son Giuseppe. Those fans of local Italian restaurants may be familiar with the Tosco shop (Eagleville) and its association with Via Veneto shop (East Norriton). The purported forty-year-old tomato sauce recipe has served the family well and has been a contributor to the family business success.

There is seating for about 50 diners at tables and booths with friendly table service.  We visited here twice on weeknights and found a decent crowd enjoying dinner. It’s a kid-friendly environment and alcohol service is BYOB.

We made two visits here prior to this review to see if they could iron out the service issue we experienced on our first visit. On this first visit, our table was attended to rather quickly by a friendly waitress who took our orders - I ordered Pasta Fagioli as a first course and an entrée of Veal Piccata with DW Sherri choosing Chicken Parmesan along with the accompanying salads. We were supplied with a wine bottle opener (self-open) and glasses of ice water in short order. Fresh hot Garlic Knot rolls were a great start to the meal. About twenty minutes after placing our order, the entrées arrived at the table without being served or soup or salad courses. The waitress was apologetic and stated that the kitchen cooked ahead instead of waiting and offered to bring the missed courses. I declined the soup, requested my salad “to go” and DW still wanted her salad. Somehow we got both salads packed to go, which I partially attribute to the waitress’ workload due to a full dining area.

The entrees were full plate affairs and the accompanying side orders of pasta with Bolognese Sauce were enough to serve multiple diners. I frequently order Veal Piccata when visiting a new Italian restaurant and this version was made with large tender veal medallions with mushrooms and a sauce with great flavor balance of lemon, wine, and butter. DW Sherri’s Chicken Parmesan arrived as a thick breaded chicken breast swathed in a delicious tomato sauce and topped with cheese.

We had to make a revisit to give Italian Delite a chance to redeem itself on the service issue when we visited with friends. On this next visit, I ordered a Pasta Fagioli soup in addition to our four entrées, and we ordered a pizza to sample before the entrée course.  After a short time, we reminded the waitress that we were awaiting   soup and salads, which were then delivered shortly after that request. The Pasta Fagioli was a great soup with a light tomato broth with pasta ribbons, beans, and vegetables. While we were eating our salads and soup, the entrées arrived a bit early, and we had to cancel the undelivered pizza. Penne Pasta with Meat Sauce and Lasagna were well received by the diners for portion size and flavor - the Veal Piccata was a successful repeat performance. I must judge that the food that we sampled here was fantastic and I can only deduct a partial rating point for the service issues we experienced. I’d suggest diners piecemeal their orders with the kitchen if multiple courses are ordered.

If you’re looking to try a new BYOB, stop by Italian Delite in Trappe to enjoy some of delicious Italian preparations that has become popular with local diners.
