On Tuesday, November 8th at 7pm Dr. Duffy will be speaking to about "Anxiety and Depression with Parkinson's Disease (PD)".
This is an important topic that many of us struggle with and it is important to be informed about the potential treatments to help maintain our mental health. Both anxiety and depression are the most common mental health issues associated with PD. According to studies nearly 50% of all people with PD experience one or both of these issues.
Not only triggered by the stress of the diagnosis but also by the effects of the disease causing changes in the areas of the brain that produce the chemicals responsible for mood and motivation. Join us on Tuesday to learn and discover ways to deal with and improve our mental health.

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.
Leading expert Jon Kabat-Zinn describes it as “awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally,” adding: “in the service of self-understanding and wisdom.”
When you become aware of the present moment, you gain access to resources you may not have realized were with you all along—a stillness at your core. An awareness of what you need and don’t need in your life that’s with you all the time. You may not be able to change your situation, but mindfulness practice offers the space to change your response to your situation.
Daughter Raises Awareness of Parkinson's Through Father's Battle The importance of our support group, Shaker's Anonymous is mentioned in the following article written about Olivia Streaman and her father, Bill Streaman. It also discusses their campaign to raise funds to find a service dog program for people with PD.
We need volunteers to help with PBM social media, nonprofit accounting and recruiting people with PD to our PBM program at the Bridgeport YMCA. if interested, please contact elainegrant@parkinsonsbodyandmind.org
Across all PD research, 85 percent of trials face delays and 30 percent never get started because of the chronic shortage of volunteers. This means people with Parkinson’s wait longer for better solutions to manage the disease. https://www.michaeljfox.org/your-role-research Clinicaltrials.gov is a very useful website hosted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) which lists all clinical trials past and present, for all conditions, and can be searched for trials that specifically address PD.
Fox Trial finder – is a resource run by the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Both people with PD and clinical trials can register on the site and the Trial finder matches up willing participants and trials.
The Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) is our landmark study. It gathers information over time to learn more about how brain disease starts and changes and how to stop it. Now it needs you.
