The obvious bible verse to counterbalance this news is Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called children of God. Matthew 5 :9 Yet there is a danger when we read this familiar words that because they are so well known that they lose their impact. There is also a danger that we might imagine peacemaking to mean we are called to be passive or inactive (ie: not acting aggressively). As I reflect on this verse I have some questions. How can we help our children and families to see that peacemaking is about our actions and our decisions to build bridges and promote harmony? That it is not just about 'over there' in Ukraine but it requires action in our homes, schools, churches and communities. How might we support our children and their families to act purposefully to be different in their own lives? To forgive those who have hurt or damaged us? How can we help families to grapple with the fact that sometimes our attempts to make peace may be rejected or fail, even though we might be praying and asking God for help?
