Dear <<First Name>>,

Happy March to you!  Between St. Patrick's Day tomorrow and the first day of Spring hot on its heels, this is a season of fun and joyful music.  Here's are some fun articles we've found for you this month:
  • What is real Irish Music?
  • A Vocal "Fitbit" to help Broadway singers avoid overuse injuries
  •  A fascinating new discovery on how your brain processes singing
As always, if you need a little help with your singing or know someone who is ready to start their vocal journey, we are still scheduling Drop-In and Initial Fit sessions.  Please feel free to give us a holler.

Have a great month!

Ask most folks to sing an Irish song for you, and you'll be greeted with a heartfelt rendition of  "O Danny Boy".  But Irish music is so much more than that!   Ireland has a vibrant musical culture, with everything from traditional music using unique instruments to an active rock and alternative scene that includes performers like The Cranberries, Enya, and Sinead O-Connor.  And you may have heard of a group called U2...

GVS Studio Trivia:  Did you know that Aurelius learned to do Irish Dance as a teenager.  His older sister Caterina discovered Irish Dance and brought him along to serve as an extra male at Ceili ("kay-lee") Dance events.  Caterina went on to become a T.C.R.G. certified Irish Dance teacher.
Professional Musical Theater singers are often among the most highly trained vocal athletes out there, with the typical Broadway performer asked to belt out their best for appreciative audiences up to 8 performances each week.   However, even the best vocal technique can't always protect against injuries due to overuse.   With modern musicals making ever-increasing demands upon vocal performers, researchers are developing a special dosimeter to measure the intensity and frequency of vocal vibration being asked of singers:  a "FitBit" for the voice!   Click here for the story.

Neuroscientists Find Part of The Brain That Responds Specifically to Singing

by Conor Feehly

This article from ScienceAlert.com talks about a new study that found that we humans have "a distinct population of neurons that responded specifically to singing" as opposed to other sounds and even instrumental music.  How cool is that?!? The article includes links to the original research published in Current Biology.
For those among us who aren't as up on their brain science, here's a great blog article by our colleague Dr. Heather Nelson to bring you up to speed:
