Gov Work report: China to improve education fairness, quality

According to the Government Work Report submitted to the National Legislature on 5 March, China now has 290 million students at its schools and universities. The report states that China will continue improving the fairness and quality of education, promote high-quality, well-balanced development and urban-rural integration of compulsory education, and continue to reduce burdens on students at the compulsory education level.
 

Gov't committed to creating more jobs for graduates

The number of students who will graduate from Chinese colleges in 2022 is likely to be about 10.76 million, 1.67 million more than the previous year. The average number of jobs available per fresh college graduate fell to 0.88 in the fourth quarter of last year, according to a survey conducted by Renmin University of China. Furthermore, many graduates are looking at competitive but stable jobs in the government – for example 70% of Tsinghua University’s graduates in 2021 secured jobs in government departments and SOEs.
 

Gov Work report: China to encourage foreign investment into broader range of sectors

China will encourage foreign-invested enterprises to move into a broader range of sectors, and support more foreign investment in medium- and high-end manufacturing, research and development, and modern services, as well as in the central, western and northeastern regions, according to a government work report submitted on 5 March to the national legislature for deliberation. 
 

Employment, education high on government agenda this year

Employment, education and healthcare are high on the agenda this year, said Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. According to official data, there will be a record increase in new job seekers this year, some 16 million in total, including 10.76 million college graduates. Premier Li noted that China is looking to generate 11-13 million new urban jobs each year. He also stressed that the government funding increase has mainly gone toward compulsory education in rural areas in recent years and that the government will ensure more funds are channelled to support rural education.
 

Reducing academic burdens for compulsory education reiterated in annual Government Work Report

China will promote the high-quality, well-balanced development and urban-rural integration of its nine-year compulsory education system, allocate educational resources according to population size, and ensure that children are able to enroll in nearby schools, said China’s annual Government Work Report, released on 12 March.

Shanghai schools pivot to e-learning following COVID-19 outbreak

In light of the latest COVID-19 outbreak in Shanghai, the city's education authority said on 11 March that all elementary, middle and high school students will switch to online learning platforms from 12 March while all kindergartens will suspend operations.
 

Taiwan school first to offer SACE curriculum

Zhong Zheng Senior High School in Taipei City has become the first public school in the region to offer the South Australian Senior Secondary Curriculum, with a partnership agreement signed on 7 March. This will contribute to Taiwan’s goal of increasing the region’s bilingual capabilities by the year 2030. Over 40,000 students have graduated from SACE’s international program since its inception.
 

40%+ Hong Kong secondary school graduates interested in universities in Mainland China

More than 40 per cent of Hong Kong secondary school graduates have expressed a “willingness” or “keen interest” in pursuing higher education in mainland China, with 70 per cent of those pupils also eyeing universities in the Greater Bay Area, according to a survey released on Sunday by a leading student counselling group. Some 56 per cent, or 1,1922, students gave a score of zero, meaning they had no interest in the idea.

Duke Kunshan University sees record spike in applications

The Chinese Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools (CFCRS) Joint Institute Duke Kunshan University received 3,300 applications from 114 countries for undergraduate studies, a record-breaking 77 percent increase from the previous year. More than half of the applications came from the U.S.
 

Australia
Proportion of women in academic leadership is on the rise

Women represent 47.6% of those employed across all industries in Australia and account for 72.2 percent of those employed in the education and training industry. Women in academic leadership positions increased from 15.5 percent in 2001 to 37.0 percent in 2021, and women in professional leadership positions increased from 36.7 percent in 2001 to 52.8 percent in 2021.
 

Aus and Vietnam enhance economic partnership

Australia and Vietnam have recently launched the Australia-Vietnam Enhanced Economic Engagement Strategy to foster cooperation between the two countries. The strategy includes building stronger higher education institutional linkages and supporting Vietnam’s university governance reforms. Australia will set up an ‘Australia-Vietnam University Leaders Dialogue’ and an ‘Australia-Vietnam Policy Institute’. The two countries will also promote student mobility and work on qualifications recognition. Australian providers are also able to explore opportunities to deliver short course and micro-credentials in Vietnam.
 

University route to PR: Hongkongers aged 30-49 apply to study in Australia, taking families with them

There has been a sharp rise in the number of middle-aged Hong Kong residents applying to pursue higher education in Australia and hoping to relocate their families there with a 7 percent increase in student visa applications between Nov 2021 and January 2022 compared to the same period in previous year. This follows the new pathway to permanent residence for Hongkongers announced by the Australian Government in November 2021.

International students are a top priority in the new targets, and the immigration streams that accommodate their applications will contribute more than half of new permanent residents. Chinese edtech sector to have its first IPO since education crackdown

Fenbi Education, a Chinese edtech platform catered to adult learners, filed for an initial public offering in Hong Kong on 28 February, according to the Chinese media outlet Sina Tech. This is the first IPO from China’s edtech industry since July 2021, when the Chinese Government announced regulatory crackdowns on curriculum tutoring services targeting students studying at compulsory education level (grade 1-9).
