At the start of Spring we are getting ready to say goodbye to our project officer, Geraldine Montgomerie, who has been co-ordinating our network for two and a half years. She will be reducing her hours at LAHWN but will continue to be an active member as we develop a strategy for the next three years - including how our network can work closely with new health and care structures due to be in place from July 2022.
In this edition we revisit what we have learned about Social Prescribing in Leeds and beyond, new projects in Leeds like The World Reimagined and how recognition of work in Leeds City Region is being recognised as best practice in the new MARCH report... Enjoy!

Arts and Social Prescribing in Leeds: One year of Thriving Communities

Summary of Thriving Communities and webinar link

This month we were delighted welcome 70 members and other attendees to our webinar with Leeds Arts Development exploring questions on social prescribing and opportunities for arts organisations. For organisations with a suitable venue we talked about the opportunity to place social prescribing link workers such as with Thackray Museum of Medicine. We discussed adding projects to Linking Leeds' database so that link workers across the city can find your project. We also looked at opportunities to access funding in partnership, such as through the arts-led social prescribing "Thriving Communities" pilot in East Leeds.

Of 36 national Thriving Communities pilot projects four have been chosen for case studies and Leeds’ pilot project led by Space2 is one of them. Initial findings show our pilot has gone well in Leeds compared to national projects and, as the project has been extended until the end of April, we look forward to sharing the evaluation in June.

Contact Anna Quinn Martin to add your activities to the Linking Leeds database at anna.quinn-martin@commlinks.co.uk

Pre print: The health benefits of arts, cultural and community engagement - A short guide for link workers

We have just learnt about a preprint of a new guide written for link workers and professionals in similar positions translating evidence on the benefit of supporting people to engage with arts and cultural community assets. It highlights research informed barriers, enablers and make suggestions on how link workers can use their role to overcome some of these barriers.

Oxford Social Prescribing Research Network: How can the cultural sector support older people’s well-being as part of social prescribing?

New research looking at how cultural institutions can operate as social prescribing venues to improve older people’s well-being in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. In looking at what works, for whom, in what circumstances and why the importance of ‘tailoring’ from link workers and cultural sector staff was a key factor. Through tailoring, older people might experience one or more of the following benefits from engaging with a cultural offer as part of social prescribing:
Immersing – people becoming absorbed in a cultural offer, which temporarily takes them away from life concerns.
Holding – providing a space or environment where people feel safe and valued.
Connecting – enabling people to develop their social networks.
Transforming – changing how people see themselves and their place in the world.
