Valerie
We want to share an update Valerie as many of you have been following her journey on our Facebook page.  Valerie came to us with severe mange.  She had lost all her hair and her skin was in terrible condition.  We have her on medication for that and are happy to report that her skin is healing, her hair is growing back and she isn't itching as much.  Sadly, after coming into our care she lost the use of her back legs and has to be expressed.  We are working diligently with her to see if she is able to regain function in her back end.  If anyone would like to help with her ongoing medical bills, please consider making a donation via adrpresident@gmail.com or by supporting one of our fundraisers outlined in the next section.  Valerie thanks you!  Valerie is not ready for adoption yet, but keep an eye on the ADR facebook page for updates on how she is doing.

A Pet's Pantry
We would like to share a special thank you to A Pet's Pantry who are Edmonton's first pet food bank for animal rescue and havee generously donated food and diapers for Valerie.  They are making a difference byworking with animal rescues towards their goal of easing the burden due to the lack of resources so that more funding can go towards critical medical care.
Please check out their website to learn more about them and support them if you are able.  A Pet's Pantry

Updates on our Current Dogs
Zoya  I am 11 years old, but in good health. My favorite things to do are cuddling on the couch, chasing squirrels, inspecting the yard regularly, jumping into a warm laundry bin and sniffing you when you get home to see what you have been up to. My least favorite thing to do is go on walks. I sleep in my kennel every night and freely roam the house by day. I love cats, but I don’t like other dogs who think they can be the boss as I like to be the boss. I am a super affectionate, loyal and a loving dog, I will expect belly rubs daily and You’ll get snuggles and love in return.
Sara.  Sweet Sara is new to us and is settling into her foster home and getting ready to go for her vet check up.  So far she is a super snuggly girl who loves walks, is curious about cats and gets along with the other small dog in her foster home.  We will share more information about her on our Facebook page as we get to know her.
Hans.  This cute little fella just joined the ADR family.  He is settling in with his foster family and getting ready for his vetting.  We are still learning about him and will share more once we get to know him better.
Pebbles is a 6 year old boy who is ready to join his new family.  He was diagnosed with IVDD and underwent surgery last year. While it is still in the early part of the healing phase for Pebbles, at this time he is unable to walk and scoots around on his back end or uses his new wheelchair. He also needs to have his bladder expressed two or three times each day.

Pebbles is a cuddly and sweet boy. He loves nothing more than relaxing on the couch or cuddling in bed. He gets along great with other dogs once he’s gotten to know them a little bit. Pebbles loves to play with his ball and moves pretty quickly around the house. He does take a few days to warm up to new people, but when he does it’s worth the wait!

Fond Rememberances
This newsletter we remember Uno, an ADR alumni who passed away recently at 12 years old.  Uno came to us in the fall of 2019. From there he moved to Alberta Beach were he lived his best retirement with his new mom shortly after she lost her husband.  Uno will be lovingly missed.

Fun Dachshund Fact

Are you pronouncing dachshund correctly?

Lots of people incorrectly say 'Dash-und' or 'Dash-hound', which is understandable because it's spelt that way! But, the correct way to pronounce Dachshund is actually 'Dachs-hund' (which sounds like 'dax-hund').

Interestingly, although Dachshund is a German word, in modern German they are more commonly known by the short name Dackel or Teckel and it is non-German countries that refer to the breed as Dachshunds.

Volunteer of the Month
Lianne Edwards
This month we would like to thank Lianne Edwards.  Lianne has been a friend and active supporter of ADR for many years.  She has fostered, helped at events, supported fundraisers and generally done whatever ADR needed.  One of her most generous acts of kindness is that she has, and continues to, personally donate money annually to cover the significant medical bills of one of our ADR alumni, Opie, who has Lupus.  Lianne, Opie and ADR thank you very much!

Non-Surgical Treatment of IVDD with the Canine Fitness Centre

IVDD are just random letters until you hear them put together by your veterinarian. Intervertebral Disc Disease is a tough diagnosis, but it doesn’t have to be a death sentence. As a small rescue of Dachshunds, a dog prone to IVDD we are lucky to have a great resource in The Canine Fitness Centre.

The Canine Fitness Centre is in Calgary, and we have a very cooperative relationship. To have your pet access the Centre all it takes is a phone call. They will contact your vet to keep an open line of communication. Just like when you go to a new doctor, physiotherapist you will fill out some basic information. From here you will go into work with your therapist for a more detailed assessment and develop a treatment plan.

The Centre is owned by Laurie and Amalia they are assisted by professionals: physiotherapists and massage therapists. They offer a variety of services: Massage therapy, Hydrotherapy, Physical Therapeutics (acupuncture, manual therapy, neuromuscular stimulation to name a few) and Fitness Conditioning. IVDD may be where ADR starts the journey with the Canine Fitness Centre, there are many other therapies that can be beneficial to your pet.

A few years ago I was lucky enough to sit in and watch one of the therapists, Sandra, do an assessment on one of our pups, Louis. Louis did have IVDD, she was mobile but had a lot of weakness. Sandra helped get her some stability back. She also talked the fosters through exercises to do at home and always made herself available for questions.
We have had great success with dogs in our care that have needed their expert assistance. If you are in the Calgary area and have a dog that could use the services they offer, give them a call, 403-204-0823.
