The event kicked off with opening remarks from Edna Kane-Willaims, Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, and welcome remarks from Ambassador Maria del Carmen Squeff, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Permanent Mission of Argentina. They discussed the urgent and pressing need to focus on supporting the rights of older women.
Then Reem Alsalem, UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, provided keynote remarks that highlighted the unique challenges faced by older women and the need to include older women at the decision-making table.
After her remarks, Rajesh Mirchandani, Chief Communications Officer at the UN Foundation, moderatered a conversation between Papa Seck, Chief Statistician of UN Women, Dr. Claudia Mahler, UN Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, and Rachel Vogelstein, Senior Advisor of the White House Gender Policy Council.
Finally, Georgina Veitch, Gender Policy Advisor of HelpAge International, and Supriya Akerkar, Director, Centre for Development and Emergency Practice at Oxford Brookes University (UK), provided reactions and observations from civil society on the previous panel.
The event closed with remarks from Masumi Ono, Chief Social Inclusion and Participation at UN DESA, in which she announced the publication of a NEW UN Advocacy Brief on Older Women. This brief, produced by UN DESA, UN Women, and the UN Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons with support from AARP.
