> Giving Dynamic Presentations
The oral communication competency ISLO is an important skill our students will use in the classroom and later on in their careers. One way students can demonstrate this competency is by giving presentations in their learning environments. As instructors we can help support our students by teaching them a few tips to take their presentations to the next level, whether they are a confident expert or a hesitant beginner. Some strategies we can teach our students include:
  • Practice with all presentation materials beforehand
  • Consider non-verbal cues such as body language and clothing choices
  • Show enthusiasm!

> Virtual Presentations
Knowing how to give an effective presentation is an important skill for our students to have regardless of delivery mode. Emphasizing the importance of practicing before an online presentation is key, but unlike on-ground presentations, our students need to think about other issues that could come up. Here are simple things students should check on before they give their online presentation:
  • Technology - Does their internet work, and are their devices fully charged?
  • Equipment - Is their camera at eye level, and is their microphone clear?
  • Multitask - Can they present, click through slides, and monitor the chat at the same time?
The American Society of Hematology has put together a video with even more ways to deliver an effective virtual presentation. Watch more by clicking the button below.

The Faculty Growth and Evaluation Process (FGEP) is an evidence-based approach to growth and development. The four domains of the FGEP are planning and preparation, professional expertise, learning environment, and learning facilitation. Improvements to the process (effective Spring 2021) include revised rubrics and centrally located activities within an FGEP Canvas course. This month's focus is the Professional Expertise rubric. Click the button below to get some ideas of how you can demonstrate the criteria:
