Our Communications Department student, Ben Lundsten '22, a Media Production major with a Radio Broadcasting concentration and Sports Communication minor was recently featured on Northwestern's LinkedIn. Way to go, Ben!

Ben hosts a show on Sunday mornings at The Mel with Augie Schmidt, a show on Sunday evenings on Life 101.9, and has an internship with Andy Youso.

"I see God working in my life probably in more ways than I see or am willing to admit. I look at the professors, coaches, and friends that I have met and I'm thankful!"
Students in our Radio workshop have been learning how to use our new Radio Automation Program!
Faculty News
Our very own adjunct instructor, Dr. Robert Allen, got his historical novel, Sunday in New York, nominated as a finalist in the Historical Fiction category for the Christian Indie Awards! We're really happy and excited for him!

The book centers around Billy Sunday, America’s outstanding evangelist of the early 20th Century, and his work in the spiritual awakening of New York City in 1917 on the eve of World War I. While the story is fictional, Sunday's New York Crusade was definitely real and touched thousands of lives. So if you're a fan of romance, politics, crime, and war this would be a great read!

Faculty Note: Study, Work, and Truth
I often begin class with a prayer that includes something like: “Thank you for all of the opportunities you present to us every day” and even more: “Lord, please give us clarity, purpose, and vision.”

The idea I am trying to communicate is that we need to be thankful daily, asking God to keep confusion away, to understand what we need to do next in each of our lives, and to do the tasks set before us, whatever they might be. We need a goal that is in concert with what God would have for us and we need to keep moving toward that goal with His strength.

For students, this can look many different ways. Sometimes it is studying for a test or writing a paper. For media students sometimes it is hanging lights, setting up microphones, operating a camera, or editing a film.

At a young age, I learned a verse that is found in II Timothy 2:15: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” King James Version (KJV). I always broke this down to its simplest meaning:
  1. Study – Be diligent or do your best to present yourself to God as one approved. (NASB)
  2. A Workman – an unashamed person who works.
  3. Truth – seek truth in scripture and use it.
For me this is simply study, work, and truth.

Study or diligently learning – it is a lifelong endeavor. Even though I am old, I still learn something every day. Life has so many lessons if you are willing to learn.

Work as hard as you can and you will feel unashamed. God designed us to work toward something. That is one of the reasons why we create – just as the Creator does!

Always seek the truth and apply it your life! I once had a professor that said “the truth is still true no matter where it came from.” I always try to remember that when I talk to people.

John 8:31-32 says: So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

What are your plans for the future?

My plans are to use the education I received at UNW to enter the event planning world. I would love to work as an event coordinator at a wedding venue. I am open to moving out of state if an opportunity arises, however, I have not committed to a job or location yet.

What opportunities have you had at UNW?

UNW has provided me with several great opportunities to further my education. I am a part of a CORE cabinet where I plan student life activities. Recently, I began working as an Event Assistant on campus which has allowed me to build a greater understanding of the event world. The final opportunity I am blessed to be a part of is the Wedding Assistant position on campus. This has given me the opportunity to better understand the wedding coordinator occupation.

What is your favorite thing about UNW?

My favorite thing about UNW is first and foremost the community. I have been blessed with strong, Christian relationships that will stay with me even after graduation. Another appreciation I have for UNW is their willingness to work with you toward your success. They provide students with great opportunities that allow them to be successful in their studies and in the real world.

Where has life taken you after UNW?

Post-graduation I joined a wonderful organization called TWR (formerly Trans World Radio) with whom I spent three years in Johannesburg, South Africa as a “media missionary.” After returning Stateside in 2015 I ended up in Oklahoma for a year and a half with a Christian radio network there. I met my wife online (yep, we’re one of those couples) and moved back to Minnesota in 2016 where I spent a year juggling part-time jobs before ending up in St. Cloud, MN with Townsquare Media as an on-air talent and digital content creator. Most recently – after a great 11-year run in the radio industry – I’ve just accepted a job with Bullseye Media in Minneapolis.

What skills that you learned from UNW did you take into the workplace?

The most valuable skills I learned at UNW have undoubtedly been the ones I learned in the Communication department. The audio skills especially have served me well in various on-air and production roles with radio stations literally around the world. At times, I’ve leaned on the video skills I learned to create video content for stations I’ve worked at. The ability to write and communicate well has also proven invaluable, as much of what I do – whether on-air, in video form, or in written content – is storytelling. While I didn’t study photography, social media, or marketing in school, I’ve also learned these skills along the way, and they’ve ultimately led me to my latest career move into the exciting world of digital advertising.

What advice do you have for current students?

Soak in as much of your college experience as you can. I loved my time at UNW (I graduated a year early but wish I could have experienced a full four years). Enjoy every day; value your relationships; appreciate your professors and staff. Most of us only get to experience college once, so don’t let it slip by. In college and afterward, trust God to lead you. I certainly couldn’t have imagined where my career would take me, but I can see how each job and season of life prepared me for the next one and how God’s hand has been at work every step of the way.
