April 2022

Register now for Sustainers Fest!
Tuesday 24 May 2022, 2pm - 4pm

Camden Council and Think & Do Camden are inviting secondary school students to Sustainers Fest - a fun and educational session empowering students on tackling the climate crisis!

Up to 8 students from your school will take part in a world café session to discuss themes aligned to the Camden School Climate Charter, as well as consider what a career in sustainability might look like.

By the end of the session, students will be able to present back their learnings to their school. This could inform:

  • a mini student citizen climate assembly
  • presentation to year group(s)
  • the creation of a student sustainability group;
  • or however your school would benefit the most from learning about the session and delivering climate action!

Mobilising students in this way will help charter signatories work towards delivering on their charter commitments, whilst also helping those schools that haven't yet signed, to take that next step and sign the charter.

For any queries about the event please contact Abigail Roberts or Ellie Bryant.

'Barrier Busters' session: Food - Tues 26 April, 4pm

Talking all things food, we will be joined by local food groups as well as food awareness organisation Proveg, to hear how students and parents can get involved in their upcoming food campaigns!

The Barrier Buster sessions are a continuation of the peer support group, aimed at overcoming some of the barriers experienced by schools delivering the charter commitments

The next session is taking place on Tuesday 26 April at 4pm. See below for meeting details:

Make Everyday Earth Day!

April marks Earth Month with Earth Day formally taking place on Friday 25 April 2022. This year's theme is 'Invest In Our Planet' and is focussed on finding solutions to combat the threat of climate change.

The Dirt Is Good Schools Programme is one way to encourage young people to take collective action on the climate crisis. There are a number of resources and materials available to support changemakers thinking about Our Earth and what they can do to help it - for every day and not just Earth Day.

For example, you could ask your students:

  • What do you love about Our Earth?
  • What action have you or could you take for Earth Month?
How can your changemakers showcase their action? They could:
  • Create a poster
  • Write a blog post
  • Create a short video

Find out more about the Dirt is Good project here

STEM Learning are also offering interactive games and resources for students and teachers to access online, from animations about The Greenhouse Effect, to an exercise examining changes to rainforests, and the option to play a Decarbonisation Game.

More information can be found here.

Teacher CPD - Journey to Carbon Zero

Transform Our World presented the Schools Climate Action Planner to teachers at Camden's COP26 Schools Summit in November 2021. The planner is an online tool to help schools map out what relevant climate actions they can take, and is a particularly useful tool for charter signatories.

On Thursday 5 May, Transform Our World (coordinated by environmental charity Global Action Plan) will be hosting an interactive online session to talk through how to use the planner. The tool will help your school:

  • Reduce it's carbon footprint
  • Identify actions across the school's campus, curriculum, community and culture
  • Help everyone in the school community understand issues on the climate crisis
  • Help students and staff learn, support wellbeing and mental health whilst taking action to protect the planet

As part of this session, teachers who have used the planner will talk about their experience and the progress they have made on their action plans so far.

Register for the webinar Thursday 5 May, 4-5pm here.

The Big Battery Hunt!

Is waste one of your climate charter commitments? Or are you simply interested in how to get your students thinking about how they can recycle different items?

Duracell have launched their third Big Battery Hunt - the UK's biggest school battery recycling programme, having recycled 11 million batteries so far!

To help recycle as many batteries as possible and reduce the 600 million batteries thrown away in UK homes each year, Duracell are offering 80 free pupil recycling boxes and full teacher resource packs available for every school that registers.

By encouraging students to recycle as many batteries as possible your school could be in with the chance to win:

  • £4,000 for outdoor playground equipment
  • £200 of Schools Direct vouchers towards school equipment
  • Certificate for each participating pupil in the class

Tackling the climate crisis in Camden will require everyone to play their part, with all contributions valuable, no matter how big or small. Teachers have the opportunity and responsibility to educate the next generation and to encourage our future ambassadors and 'big-thinkers' on tackling climate change.
