Housing Conditions claims – What to do about them
Mr Iain Wightwick, Barrister at Unity Street Chambers
Iain is a barrister and mediator, accredited for direct public access work.  He works from Chambers in Bristol.  He is a specialist property lawyer, with a particular interest in landlord and tenant, especially social housing.

Iain represents many local authorities, housing associations and other social landlords, limited companies and private individuals, mostly in County and High Court claims and occasionally in the Court of Appeal. He lectures and provides seminars on property related issues.

He is the author of two books - one on antisocial behaviour injunctions and one more relevant to this seminar- “A Practical Guide to Responding to Housing Disrepair and Unfitness Claims”, published by Law Brief Publishing last October.

His books are available from the publishers, or on Amazon.  The Housing conditions has as its central theme a detailed description of the steps he takes, and helps clients to take, in putting his philosophy into action.

Housing Conditions claims – stemming the flood

Steve and Iain will talk about their methods of dealing with the rising numbers of housing conditions (previously disrepair) claims which are causing some registered providers significant resource and financial issues.

Iain is a champion of ADR, particularly the cost-fee internal complaints process which every social landlord is obliged to offer, and Steve will talk about how that strategy translates into the work of the surveying/property team.

The Court of Appeal and a number of County Court judges have recently handed down very helpful judgements, and, in Iain's view, the days of ‘ambush’ claims and pre-action disclosure applications are over.
