Continue celebrating Women's History Month by checking out this spotlight video on Childrens and Womens Rights Activist Malala Yousafzai. Malala would not let the Taliban stop her from seeking education for herself and many other girls after going to school was banned in Pakistan. In this educational video for students, we take time out to celebrate the life and accomplishments of Malala including winning the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 17 and more.
Do you know the story of Simone Biles? Simone is one of the greatest athletes in history. At age 16, she won two gold medals at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, including the all-around (the total score from competing in all events). She has now won 25 world medals, 19 of them gold. That’s the most in world gymnastics history!

How did Simone begin her gymnastics career? It all started with a trampoline at her grandparents house. Check out this Times for Kids article, This is Simone, to learn more!

Reflection Questions:
1. Simone Biles has helped change the face of gymnastics both with her incredibly difficult tricks and advocacy for mental health and fair treatment of gymnasts. What personal qualities have helped Simone become so successful?
2. What does it mean to be an advocate and a role model?
3. Even the greatest athletes in history sometimes get nervous and struggle with mental health. What do you do to relax when you are feeling stressed or worried about something?

MIDDLE SCHOOL CORNER

Activism, changemakers and hope for the future

Malala Yousafzai is the cofounder of Malala Fund. She began her campaign for education at age 11 when she anonymously blogged for the BBC about life under the Taliban in Pakistan's Swat Valley. Inspired by her father's activism, she soon began advocating publicly for girls' education, attracting international media attention and awards.

At age 15, Yousafzai was shot by the Taliban for speaking out. She recovered in the United Kingdom and continued her fight for girls. In 2013, she founded Malala Fund. A year later, she received the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her advocacy for 12 years of free, safe, quality education for every child.

FOOD EXPLORERS

Click to watch how to make Shahi Tukra which is considered the Pakistani version of bread pudding with just a few simple ingredients!
Our Women's History lesson this month focuses on Malala, a woman making grand changes as she advocates for female education rights in Pakistan and around the world. For food explorers this week, we invite you to watch this video of how a traditional Pakistani dessert, Shahi Tukra, is prepared.

If watching with young learners, ask them what their reactions might be and if they would like to try cuisine from around the world one day? These small conversations can open up their minds to different ideas and allow them to practice cultural and social awareness along the way!
