Dear <<First Name>>,

This week, I announced the Electric Vehicles (EVs) Maintenance Training program's expansion to three more post-secondary institutions: Vancouver Island University, College of the Rockies, and Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

By working with these institutions, we are helping more auto technicians develop the skills they need to work on EVs. This in turn will help reduce our emissions and build a cleaner future for everyone. #CleanBC

As more electric vehicles hit the road in British Columbia, we also need to train more people to service them. This is the first of many steps in supporting you in switching to electric!

We are continuing our Ministry Spotlight! This is where we highlight the key 2021 accomplishments of my ministry, the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Education.
Funding for Implementation of TRC Calls to Action

My ministry's highest priority is ensuring that people can access and be successful in their post-secondary training and education. These investments will build a strong and resilient workforce that is ready for any challenges.

Indigenous Post-Secondary Education & Training!

In June 2020, we provided $6.15 million for Indigenous Post-Secondary Education & Training. The $6.15 million includes a one-time additional investment of $1.75 million by the Ministry for programs and services for Indigenous students. The funding responds to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action 57, 62, and 92, and articles 14.2, 14.3 and 21.1 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

My Ministry remains committed to helping students by removing barriers to education by funding initiatives and programs to empower Indigenous students to access post-secondary education.

"When Indigenous students have access to learning and cultural supports, a world of opportunity opens up that can significantly impact their future careers and lives. Students are our future. By improving Indigenous students' experiences and outcomes in post-secondary school, we are advancing reconciliation and helping to build a brighter future for everyone."
-Scott Fraser, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation
Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the week:
Budget 2022 provides new funding to address homelessness in B.C.

We are investing $633 million in new initiatives aimed at helping prevent and reduce chronic homelessness in the province.

This includes dedicated support for youth aging out of government care and people with complex health and mental health challenges.

Minimum wage increases tied to inflation to support workers, families

On June 1, 2022, B.C.’s lowest-paid workers will get a pay boost, with the general minimum wage increasing from $15.20 to $15.65 an hour.

We’re following through on our 2020 commitment to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour through measured, predictable increases, and then tie the future increase to the rate of inflation.

Historic help for youth from care will support strong transitions to adulthood

Young people transitioning from government care deserve to have the same support, guidance and time to grow that their peers rely on.

We’re moving away from a broken system we inherited to provide new historical support for all youth aging out of care, not just a few.  Young people in government care will have access to new and increased supports until the age of 27.
